Effect of dietary component on the albumen gland of the snail, Euhadra peliomphala was examined. The snails were kept under the five different diet conditions, i.e., high-protein, no-protein, potato, cabbage, and carrot diet conditions for four weeks. The weight of the albumen gland of the snails kept high-protein diet was 2.8-fold larger than that of the snails kept no-protein diet. The ratio of the albumen gland weight to the whole body weight of high-protein diet group was 3.1-fold larger than that of no-protein diet group. The gland weights and the ratios of the gland weights to whole body weights of another three diet groups showed intermediate values between those of high-protein and no-protein diet group. To study the effect of diet component on the albumen gland proteins, soluble proteins extracted from the glands of five diet groups were determined, and subjected to polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis in the presence of sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS-PAGE). No significant difference about the protein contents per weight of the glands of five diet groups was found. Although SDS-PAGE did not show any clear differences of the protein composition in these five diet groups, the three components of the molecular weights of 68K, 82K, and 90K, were significantly decreased in the gland of no-protein diet group. In conclusion, this study clearly demonstrated that the different dietary components in particular protein component affect the size and protein constituents of the albumen gland. It was also suggested that the protein in diet components are required for the sexual maturation of the albumen gland of the snail, E. peliomphala.
