Abstract
The uptake of L-ascorbic acid (L-AsA), D-isoascorbic acid (D-IAsA) and their oxidized forms (L-DAsA. D-DIAsA) by human, monkey, guinea pig, rabbit, sheep and horse erythrocytes in vitro were investigated. Reduced forms of AsA and IAsA are uptaken very slowly for a long time by human, monkey, guinea pig and rabbit erythrocytes ; AsA is uptaken respectively at the rate of 9,9,9,6 % and IAsA is 14,15,21,12 % per two hours. But sheep and horse erythrocytes do not uptake both ASA as well as IAsA. Next, oxidized forms, very different results are got by different species ; that is, oxidized forms are uptaken very rapidly by human and monkey erythrocytes both DAsA and DIAsA, and got in a state of equilibrium within 5〜10 minutes (human erythrocytes uptake 50 % (DAsA), 42 % (DIAsA), monkey 73 % (DAsA), 44 % (DIAsA) after ten minutes) . The great part of uptaken DAsA and DIAsA is reduced (73〜78 %) in the erythrocytes. DAsA is uptaken into guinea pig erythrocytes (19%) as well as in the case of human, monkey, while DIAsA is not uptaken. Then neither DAsA nor DIAsA is uptaken by rabbit, sheep or horse erythrocytes.
