Abstract
Dietary intake of niacin in 101 healthy elderly men and 183 women aged from 60 to 79 years was surveyed. The subjects were inhabiting in three farm villages, four mountain villages and three fishing villages in Iwate Prefecture. The intakes of niacin from food were calculated from 3-day fool records using "the Standard Tables of Food Composition" in Japan. The Intakes of tryptophan from food were calculated using "The Amino Acid Composition of Foods" in Japan. The convention is to consider 60mg of tryptophan as equivalent to 1 mg niacin. No significant differences of dietary intake of niacin were observed among the distinct areas. The mean intakes of niacin per day were 29.4±6.7 mg for men and 24.7±6.4 mg for women, respectively. These values for men and women respectively were 209% and 223% of the Recommended Dietary Allowance for the Japanese.
