Abstract
From epidemiological studies, it has been reported that cancer patients show a tendency to be vitamin B_6 (B_6) deficiency; and also that the presence of an appropriate concentration of vitamin B_6-derivatives, such as PN, PL and PLP, suppresses the proliferation of tumor cells. To maintain the cellular concentration of B_6 derivatives, pyridoxal 5'-β-D-glucoside (PL-5'β-Glc) or pyridoxal 5'-β-D-galactoside (PL-5'β-Gal), which are easily absorbed into body fluid but not easily metabolized, were synthesized. We tested whether they could suppress the proliferation of a feline mammary tumor FRM cell line. Pyridoxal 5'β-tetra-O-acetyl galactoside (PL-5'β-tetra-O-acetyl-Gal) was the most effective candidate as an inhibitor for tumor cell proliferation; the compound was sufficient to inhibit cell proliferation at 0.1 mM concentration for 5 days.
