Abstract
Elevated serum total homocysteine (tHcy) levels are associated with increased risk for cardiovascular disease and dementia, which can be influenced by folate status and polymorphisms in folate-metabolizing gene, especially methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR) C677T. This risk was successfully corrected by taking 400μg/d of folate. To prevent these diseases personalized health promotion through folate status was carried out with the genotype announcement in the "Sakado Folate Projects". The folate intake of 400μg/d above the current RDA (240μg/d) was recommended for the subjects with MTHFR TT. Serum folate levels were significantly increased and serum tHcy levels were significantly decreased during 4 months our nutritional intervention, particularly in the subjects with MTHFR TT. The frequency of intake of "green leaf vegetables" which were rich in folate and the fortification foods such as "Sakado folate bread" were increased. This nutritional intervention based on personalized nutrition by genotype announcement was effective on behavioral change in the clients and improvement of nutrition status.
