Abstract
Humans are unable to synthesize vitamin C (VC). Therefore, if we do not take VC from diet, we will fall into VC deficiency, causing various physical disorders and then eventually develop scurvy and death. To clarify the relationship between VC and aging, we developed SMP30 knockout mice that are defective in vitamin C biosynthesis. Using SMP30 knockout mice, we revealed that long-term shortage of VC shortened their lifespan. Moreover, we found that VC deficiency caused muscle atrophy and a deterioration in physical performance. Like mice, our longevity might be shortened if VC deficiency continues for a long time. To avoid this undesirable thing, we have to take enough VC from fresh vegetables and fruits, and beverages and supplements containing VC.
