Focusing on the run-off region of boxing weld joining a stiffening steel plate edgewise to either side of a principal steel plate, the authors developed a criterion for evaluating the fatigue strength of the boxing fillet joint at the toes of its run-off bead under compressive stress. More exactly, fatigue data so far obtained by fatigue-testing boxing-welded elementary component test specimens of TMCP-HT50 (KA36) steel plate at the room temperature, in the atmosphere, and under an axially applied constant compressive load (R=-∞) were sorted out and statistically analyzed. Consequently it was decided that the fatigue strength of the boxing fillet joint at the toes of its run-off bead under compressive stress may be expressed as follows for evaluation, the resultant fatigue strength value offering a considerable margin of safety. Δσ_5=1300・N_<cf>^<-0.273> where Δσ_5: Stress range at 5mm from toe of boxing fillet run-off bead N_<cf>: Life equal to number of stress cycles to fracture (N_f) under tensile loading
