Chloromethylation of indigo and thioindigo in concentrated sulfuric acid and sym-dichlorodimethyl ether or aluminiumchloride-pyridine mixture and sym-dichlorodimethyl ether yielded mono-, bis- and trichloromethyl compounds from the former and mono- and bis-chloromethyl compounds from the latter. In the case of indigo, the chloromethyl groups were entered into 5, 5' and 7-positions. These chloromethyl compounds gave pyridinium salts and isothiuronium salts, and their dyeing abilities were explained.
