Phenol was reacted with 3-methy1-2-butenol (prenol) or 1, 3-dichloro-3-methylbutane (DMB) by the action of phosphoric acid.
In the former reaction, the main products were o- and p-prenylphenol. In the latter, 2, 2-dimethyl-chroman and p-prenylphenol were the main products and some substituted chromans and indanes were also obtained. The reaction products using other reagents such as prenyl chloride or isoprene were also studied. Furthermore, the reactions of isoprene with the intermediate compounds of this reaction were investigated.
From these results, the reaction routes were discussed.
