Abstract
The multilingual measures at the Saitama Prefectural Museum of Modern Art aim to clarify the current state and challenges of multilingual support in museums, using this institution as a case study. This study organizes the concept of multilingual support, thoroughly analyzes the museum’s current strategies, and examines the practical realities of these efforts based on interviews with curators. It specifically focuses on addressing languages other than English, evaluating initiatives such as the use of technology and multilingual signage, while identifying limitations in translation efforts for special exhibitions and collection explanations. Furthermore, it explores the potential for enhancing multilingual support through budget allocation, leveraging digital technology, and analyzing visitor data. This research aspires to contribute to the promotion of multicultural coexistence and improved accessibility for international visitors in Japan’s cultural institutions.
