In this study, we applied the centration and centrifugation of facial parts, used as makeup techniques for women, to men's faces. We verified two points: the difference in impression changes using makeup and photo processing, and the impression changes directionality between these types of makeup in men. We presented the untouched faces of 11 men and faces whose parts were centripetally or centrifugally arranged using these makeup manipulation methods (22 faces) and photo processing (22 faces) to female participants as stimuli. We asked them to evaluate the traits of friendliness, liveliness, maturity, and intelligence. Centripetalization and centrifugalization caused impression changes. Furthermore, tendencies between makeup and photo processing differed. Specifically, centripetalization using makeup and centrifugalization using photo processing enhanced the evaluation of intellectuality. Finally, findings on impression change caused by centripetalization with makeup on male faces were generally equivalent to those for female ones.

Parents have a variety of concerns regarding their children's adornment. The purpose of this study was to clarify what kind of problems mothers perceive regarding their children's adornment, and to clarify the relationship between the state of these problems and the age of girls. Data were analyzed from a total of 608 cases ranging from preschoolers to junior high school students. The most frequent problem was "wanting to wear the same clothes all the time," followed by "complaining about or not wearing the clothes chosen by the parents." After categorizing the problems, an examination of the relationship revealed a unique pattern depending on the age. It was revealed that not only changes in the environment accompanying the growth of girls, but also factors such as the way parents perceive their daughters as they mature are related to the emergence of the problem.

Evidence suggests that maternal parenting attitudes experienced during childhood may lead to the development of body dysmorphic disorder (BDD), although its mechanism remains uncertain. This study aimed to examine whether maternal parenting attitudes such as care and overprotection were related to dysmorphic concern and whether rejection sensitivity mediated these relationships. A total of 428 Japanese university students took part in a web-based survey. Although maternal care was not significantly associated with dysmorphic concern, a significant positive association was found between maternal overprotection and dysmorphic concern. Furthermore, both maternal care and maternal overprotection were related to dysmorphic concern via rejection sensitivity. Future studies should examine whether these findings can be replicated among patients with BDD.

This study explored the “family members’ link coordination” phenomenon from a psychological perspective, defined as enjoying matching fashions and wearing matching clothes by parents and children or brothers and sisters. In Study 1, we conducted an interview survey with mothers (n=4) raising infants and toddlers. In Study 2, we conducted a questionnaire survey with female university students (n=89) on their experience of conducting or observing “link coordination among family members.” Based on the results, we have discussed how to enjoy the phenomenon and the phenomenon's effects on surrounding people.

Similarity attraction is a robust phenomenon related to interpersonal attraction. Previous studies have focused primarily on similarities in attitudes or personalities. We experimentally examined the effects of similarities in clothing and makeup on interpersonal attraction. Undergraduate women (n = 41) participated in Study 1, which experimentally demonstrated that similarities in makeup enhanced interpersonal attraction. Undergraduate women (n = 47) participated in Study 2, which experimentally showed that similarities in clothing increased interpersonal attraction, whereas identical clothing was less attractive than similar clothing. These results suggest that similarities in clothing and makeup could enhance attraction at people’s first-meetings and promote relationships. However, contrary to the prediction of the similarity attraction theory, identical clothes might decrease interpersonal attraction by interfering with the satisfaction of uniqueness needs. We have discussed the limitations and future directions of this research.
