Lanthanum (La) carbonate has been introduced as an effective phosphate-binder to reverse hyperhosphatemia due to chronic kidney disease. To clarify the histological distribution of La in the brain, rats were orally administrated with La-chloride in drinking water (5 mg/ml) for 4 weeks or intravenously administrated with La (5 mg/kg body weight/week) for 4 weeks. Histological paraffin sections of the brain were stained by HE and ALC method for La. No degenerative features were observed by light microscopy in the brain after La administration for 4 weeks and any positive ALC reaction was not observed in the brain, except for around the vessels in the meninges.
