This paper presents a method for automated extraction of liver regions from multi-phase abdominal X-ray CT images. In CT diagnosis of liver, four abdominal CT images taken at different phase are used. Liver regions in those CT images have different gray pattern due to time-variation of distribution of the contrast medium. Therefore, most of previous studies on automated extraction of liver region has used only one phase or two phases of CT images. In the paper, we propose a single procedure which can extract liver regions from all phases of CT images is proposed. This procedure is based on region growing technique with single parameter easily adjustable to each phase of CT images. Using practical CT images, performance of the proposed method is evaluated experimentally.
