The purpose of this study was to clarify the relationships between maxillofacial asymmetry and anteroposterior skeletal pattern, using lateral and anteroposterior cephalometrics. The results were as follows : 1. As the degree of the chin displacement became larger, mid face, lower face and gonial angle were upslanted on the deviation side. 2. As ANB angle became smaller, the degree of the chin displacement was larger. 3. There was a significant difference between skeletal Class III and Class I, and between Class III and Class II, in the degree of the chin displacement. These results demonstrate that there is a close relationship between the displacement of the chin and anteroposterior skeletal pattern, and that cases with skeletal Class IIIn showed more prominent maxillofacial asymmetry, compared with those of cases with skeletal Class I and Class II.

Coincidence in dental and facial midlines is one of the important goals of orthodontic treatment. However, there is no objective method for obtaining a facial midline. Moreover, the difference in recognition of a facial midline between orthodontists and laypersons is also uncertain. We defined a subjectively determined facial midline as an imaginary facial midline, and we clarified the setting mechanism of it by orthodontists. The purpose of this study is to analyze the difference in recognition of a facial midline between orthodontists and laypersons by conducting the same investigation to laypersons. 97 students of the faculty of liberal arts were chosen as the subject. They were instructed to find the middle point between two predetermined points (research 1) and to draw their own imaginary facial midline in photographs of two adult Japanese without obvious facial asymmetry (research 2). As a result of research 1, we found both groups recognized significantly accurate middle points if the distance was less than 60mm. From research 2, we also found that the standard method of both groups to set the imaginary facial midline was almost same. They both drew it as perpendicular as possible to relatively horizontal lines with attention to some points in the lower part of the nose and the upper lip, or just as an approximate line of those points.

A critical pathway helps to organize patient' s care and eliminates variations created by doctors' different experience. In order to establish a critical pathway for orthodontic/surgical combined treatment, we investigated the accuracy of pre-surgical orthodontic treatment concerning relationships between incisors, occlusal plane angle and amount of mandibular setback. The following results were obtained. As for the prediction of mandibular setback, the differences between before and after pre-surgical orthodontic treatment ranged from -2.7mm to +2.9 mm horizontally and from -5.9mm to +2.4 mm vertically. The differences between these two predictions of mandibular setback were evaluated by multiple regression analysis. The dependent variables were the horizontal and vertical differences in these predictions. The independent variables were the difference between the position of U1 predicted initially and the position after pre-surgical orthodontic treatment, the difference between positions of L1 and the difference between occlusal plane angles. The horizontal difference was related to the following variables : the horizontal difference of U1, the difference of occlusal plane angle, the horizontal and vertical differences of L1. The vertical difference was related to the vertical differences in U1 and the vertical differences in L1. The results suggest that attention should be given to the positions of the incisors, not only horizontally but also vertically, in order to perform mandibular setback as accurately as that predicted initially. Therefore, we should establish a critical pathway that enables evaluation of the positions of incisors during pre-surgical orthodontic treatment and improve the accuracy for the tooth movement.
