Travel engages in making new connections and extending one's network or sustaining one's existing networks, and such a social engagement would be essential to enhance one's social capital. As a result of growing urban development, a strong local social capital could be more important. This paper explores impacts of social capital measured in two dimensions (i.e. social network and participating in local community activities) on travel choice for discretionary activities. For this purpose, by using data collected in Hanoi (Vietnam), a logit model for destination choice and an ordered probit model for trip generation were developed with controlling for socio-demographics, mobility and accessibility, and built environment factors. Results show that social capital at the individual level generally has more impact on travel choice (i.e. destination, trip generation) compared with one at the community level.

Metro Manila, being the center of activity, is faced with issues pertaining to mobility and population. While the government tries to mitigate these problems, it is in the interest of corporations to look into ways on how to improve the commute experience of their employees. This study aims to look at what the private sector can do to help reduce traffic congestion in the Central Business District while improving the travel experience of its employees. Finding an alternative can improve employee productivity whilst trying to shift private car users to higher occupancy transport. Data from employee surveys were analyzed to see the employees profile, modal split, fare thresholds, and travel preferences going to work and going home. The results of this study can then be used as a guide in determining which company-provided alternative transport (shuttles, carpooling, outsource to transport network service) should be implemented for the company.

The public bus is a fundamental transport mode and plays an important role serving the economy and society of cities. In Bangkok Metropolitan Region (BMR), existing bus routes have been used for more than three decades, while land use together with road and rail (sky train and subway) networks have been changing significantly. This paper presents the study of bus rerouting in the BMR. The multimodal transport model was set up and calibrated for evaluating the impacts of bus rerouting schemes. The major findings from the model showed that the reroute schemes could increase the coverage area 52%, bus travel distance 63%, passenger volume 4%, passenger per bus 40%, and average load factor 13%. In addition, the schemes could significantly reduce the travel time 4%, waiting time 14%, journey time 12%, and interchanges 2%.

This study makes an effort to analyze the issues that affect the safety of women in public transports and to propose an effective solution for this. The study has been carried out on the Indian context, with special reference to the state of Delhi. For this study the methodology used is primary in nature and the data collection is done mainly through a questionnaire, street survey and rapid assessment. The results from the study show that there are numerous issues that affect the safety of women in Public transport which may be grouped as sociological, socio-demographic and environmental factors. The women travellers are also categorised according to their interest of travel. This study can be useful for the authorities to spot the risk zones and to improve or implement safety measures in the transportation systems by developing a better understanding of the safety issues.

This paper focuses on the understanding of the acceleration driving behaviour in motorway weaving sections. An analysis of detailed trajectory data collected from moderately congested traffic flow of a typical weaving section in the M1 motorway, UK (J 42-43). The proposed acceleration model allows the car-following behaviour (acceleration/deceleration) corresponds with both stimulus (positive/negative relative speed). The model is conditional on gap threshold and reaction time distributions (probabilistic model) capturing the heterogeneity across drivers. most of traffic response differently from the stimulus condtions where 43.5% falls in deceleration with positive relative speed. All the parameters in each model are estimated jointly using Maximum Likelihood Estimation technique and reveal significant differences.

A number of programs aimed at promoting sustainable travel behavior have already been developed. These programs are implemented and delivered through various communication media. However, their development lacks an explicit theoretical foundation. Here we describe how the Stage Model of Self-Regulated Behavioral Change (SSBC) is used for the first time in the development of Blaze, consisting of Smartphone and web application. SSBC posits that behavioral change is achieved by a transition through a temporal sequence of different stages. Using SSBC, we systematically develop theory-based interventions. We evaluate the usability and potential effectiveness of Blaze among university students in Metro Manila, Philippines. Our results suggest that Blaze is relatively user-friendly and can provoke reflection about personal travel behavior. We also report a 4.6% reduction in car use. Some students have also progressed to more advanced stages in the behavior change process. Blaze thus has great potential in inducing travel behavior change.

The suitability of the model for short-notice bus-based evacuation under dynamic demand conditions (SBED) for simulating earlier local floods and associated evacuation planning has been investigated. Evacuation planning of Kawajima Town is used as a case study, with selected pickup points becoming gradually unavailable after the passage of certain periods of time. The SBED model is found to maximize the number of evacuees, regardless of the flooding pattern of the pickup points, as long as the number of buses is insufficient for complete removal of all evacuees at all pickup points. However, when the number of buses becomes sufficient for complete evacuation, the priority order for evacuating the pickup points is found to be exactly the same as that of gradual flooding. Furthermore, a scenario that takes account of the effect of congestion on travel times has also been analyzed. It is found that a doubling of the normal value of travel times due to congestion results in 30% fewer people being evacuated by the same number of buses. This emphasizes the need to avoid congestion delays during evacuation operations.

The objective of this research was to develop a model that combines the private, public and external costs of passenger urban transport networks. Private costs consist of operational-private costs borne by the users. Public costs comprise spending on infrastructure and maintenance. External costs include the impact on society and the environment such as air pollution, congestion, noise pollution, traffic accidents and greenhouse effect. This model was applied to simulated configurations of intermodal transport networks using inputs from the passenger transport system of the greater Paris region. From qualitative description and quantitative estimation, intermodal transport is not as attractive as the use of motorized vehicles in the greater Paris region. The trip cost analysis provides authorities and decision-makers with a reference for changing the current situation of urban transport in the greater Paris region. The objective was to investigate the effects of urban transport policy, which, in terms of economic optimum, aims to internalize all decomposed costs of passenger trips in the prospective competition between intermodal transport and other modes.
