In recent years tremendous strides have been made in X-ray, endoscopy, and cytological examination for diseases of the stomach. Inspite of recent progress in the development of various diagnostic technics, discrimination between benign and malignant gastric diseases is sometimes difficult. Ihe authors have made a study of a new diagnostic method using gastrocinematography. The observation of the peristalsis turned out to play an important role in more accurate discrimination. By the observation of peristalsis the authors succeeded in determining more precisely the size of a stomach cancer, the outline of a cancerous area and the relationship between stomach cancer and surrounding organs. Next the authors noticed that so-called hallation often showed the slight unevenness of the mucosal surface which can hardly be found during endoscopic examination. The result was that the observation of so-called hallation played an important role in macroscopic confirmation of every tipe of early gastric cancer. If improvements in examination methods using gastrocinematography continue, this diagnostic method will become better established and more popular.
