There are old igneous rocks in the Siwalik, Nepal, and western region from Kolkata, India. 40Ar-39Ar ages of 1.5-1.7 Ga have been obtained for these rocks. We want to present these results and discuss the geochemical and heological meanings for these rocks.

The western Ethiopian Precambrian occupies a key part as it is located where a low-grade volcano-sedimentary belt of Arabian-Nubian shield (ANS) considerably narrows and wedges into a high-grade gneissic Mozambique Belt (MB). Recent geochemical and petrogenetic studies, as well as radiogenic dating of the granitoid plutons emplaced at the interface of the ANS and MB augmented our understanding of the evolution of the granitoid magmas. During the Neoproterozoic time the granitic magmatism changed from subduction-related calc-alkaline ® anatectic ® anorogenic types. Hence, we present a synoptic view of the petrogenetic processes responsible for the generation of these granitoids using major and trace element studies.

The Japan Sea basin was formed at around 20-15 Ma through back-arc opening process accompaning megatectonic structural change of crust and mantle, and at present, is observed oceanic crust in the basin. We have obtained geochemical evidences to support compositional chemical change of the crust and mantle in the isotopic compositions of Pb, Nd, and Sr in the Tertiary volcanic rocks, NE Japan.

Peridotite xenoliths from Noyamadake represent ca. 7 Ma samples of relatively dry mantle wedge that equilibrated with a high geotherm. Re-Os isotopic systematics suggest presence of older continental lithosphere and help to constrain the composition and behaviour of Re and Os in the mantle wedge.

The shergottite, nakhlite and chassignite (SNC) meteorites are widely accepted as being of martian origin, and have been studied extensively in relation to martian magmatism. However, the origin of martian magmatism remains unclear. The model proposed in this report demonstrates that two-stage melting of plumes from the deepest mantle reproduces the chemical and isotopic variations of martian magmas represented by the martian meteorites, and is suggestive of a preserved layered-mantle structure resulting from early differentiation processes. The model further suggests that the deepest mantle layer in Mars may represent a major water reservoir.

Amoeboid olivine aggregates (AOAs) are major types of refractory objects in carbonaceous chondrites (CC). However, AOAs from ordinary chondrites (OC) have not been reported, even though fine-grained CAIs from OC have been found. Here we report the petrography and isotopic compositions of AOAs from the Semarkona LL3.0 chondrite, in order to compare the petrography and isotopes of AOAs in OC and CC, and establish the genetic relationships between CAIs and AOAs in the early solar system.

Distribution of trace metals in seawater can keenly reflect physical, chemical and biological processes occurring in the ocean. The Sulu Sea (the Phillipines) is a semi-enclosed basin enclosed by shallow sills, showing quite different characteristics from those of open sea in terms of inputs of lithogenic materials and deep water circulation. However, few sutides have been made for distribution of trace metals in the Sulu Sea. In this study, we will reveal the distribution of trace metals, such as Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, Cd and Pb in the Sulu Sea, and its adjacent seas, the Celebes Sea, South China Sea and western part of the Northwest Pacific.

The Setouchi volcanic belt in SW Japan is characterized by the occurrence of high-Mg andesites (HMAs) having unusually high Mg concentrations. The compositional similarity between such HMAs and the inferred bulk continental crust may suggest the genetic linkage between them. HMAs would have formed under unusual tectonic settings, as basaltic magmas are produced dominantly in the mantle wedge of modern subduction zones. Therefore, knowledge of the tectonic settings of particular convergent margins where HMA magmatism has taken place is critical. This study presents K-Ar, Ar-Ar and FT age data for volcanic rocks including HMAs and related andesites from the Seotuchi volcanic belt, and demonstrates the tectonic setting of formation of that characteristic volcanic arc.

The Moessbauer spectrometer manipulated by robotic arm of NASA Opportunity Rovers landed on Mars discovered the mineral of Jarosite. This proved the existence of water in the past on Mars. So far a few studies on Jarosites produced on earth have been done. So it is important to determine the Moessbauer parameters of Jarosites produced in different places on earth.
We have been measuring the Moessbauer spectra of Jarosites on the earth. It is possible that Moessbauer parameters of Mikasaite is to be similar with those of Jarosites. If so the deduction of NASA about the existence of water might be wrong. So we are planning to measure the Moessbauer spectrum of Mikasaite

The existence of long lived enriched lithospheric mantle is known beneath the Dharwar and periphery area in south India. Although the event of mantle enrichment occurred at the late Archaean is now controversial, but it is significant topic to reveal the early history of the Dharwar craton. It is understood that the late Archaean subduction was major event in the history of the Dharwar craton and generated the long lived enriched lithospheric mantle.

High field strength element (denoted as HFSE, including zirconium, niobium, hafnium and tantalum) serve as important tools in characterizing mantle reservoir and evolution processes. However, the determination of these elements for rock samples is particularly difficult, because they often reside in refractory minerals that are resistant to acid attack and are not chemically stable in simple nitric solution which is preferred in ICP-MS analysis. Trueness of Zr and Hf yielded from commonly used mixed acid digestion strongly are significantly subject to mineralogical composition of rocks. We improved both acid and alkali-fusion digestion methods to enhance the decomposition efficiency and to reduce blank and matrix effect for these two digestion techniques, respectively.

Recent studies have proposed Li isotopes as a significant tracer providing constraints on the mantle heterogeneity and material recycling. We carried out in-situ analyses of Cpx grains in various mantle xenoliths using SIMS for the determination of internal standards. The results of high d7Li (ca. +5 permil) values are consistent with that of MC-ICP-MS. On the other hand, Cpx grains of lower d7Li (< -11 permil) indicate the variations in Li concentration and the d7Li value even in a single grain, which are not suitable for internal standards. Lower d7Li values and heterogeneity of Li in Cpx grains are suspected to result from the metasomatic fluid.
