We studied origin and decomposition processes of herbicide, Diuron, occurring in river waters of Hiroshima prefecure. In Kurose River and Ashida River, the concentration of diuron was highest during warm seasons, supplied from paddy field and other fields, and decomposed by sunlight irradiation and microbial activity. The half-life and decomposition rate constants in river waters were determined.

We collected lake water samples at several depths from the central part of Lake Pumayum Co locating at 5000m MSL on Tibetan Plateau, China, at about 60m deep in August 2006. About 100 ml of water sample was transferred plastic bottle, sealed tightly and brought back to Japan. At the AMS laboratory, dissolved inorganic carbon fraction was separated from each water sample, and analyzed for carbon isotopic ratios (14C/12C and 13C/12C) with a Tandetron AMS at Nagoya University. Terrestrial and water plants were also collected around the lake, and analyzed for carbon isotopic ratios. Depth profiles of DIC contents in the lake water, 14C concentrations and δ13C values of terrestrial and water plants as well as DIC will be discussed.

We report oxygen isotope fractionation of dissolved oxygen during reduction by Fe(II). Ferrous sulfate is dissolved in 60ml of water, and the reaction bottles were kept at 23, 40, and 54C. The headspace samples were extracted using gastight syringe and injected into EA/IRMS to measure concentration and isotope composition of oxygen molecule. The reduction rate of oxygen molecule increases with the increase of the reaction temperature and ferrous sulfate amounts. In contrast, oxygen isotope fractionation factor becomes smaller with the increase of reaction rate.

Chemical weathering of basalts draws important consideration for their study because of its enhanced role in controlling several geochemical processes such as silicate weathering and associated CO2 consumption. A systematic and detailed study on chemical weathering was made from the Deccan basalts (India) by analyzing elements and isotopes in river waters and sediments. The results show that the average contemporary silicate erosion rates and CO2 consumption rates of the Deccan are higher than their fractional aerial coverage. The entire studies on chemical weathering demonstrate the implication of basalt weathering, their enhanced role in weathering rates, atmospheric CO2 consumptions rates, and the role of Deccan basalt weathering to the secular Sr-isotope evolution at the KTB.

The objective of this research is to obtain the knowledge about decomposition of sinking particulate nitrogen in the twilight zone ( depths below the euphotic zone to 1000m) in the western subarctic Pacific and its influence on the nitrogen isotopic ratio. Samples were collected from March 20th, 2005 to September 18th, 2005 at 150m, 540m and 1000m water depth using time series sediment trap system. First, the simple settling model which could reconstruct the fluxes of settling particles at 540m and 1000m using the settling particle fluxes at 150m as initial values, was developed. In this model, following assumptions were made: 1) Total components sink simultaneously as same aggregates. 2) Organic materials, Calcium Carbonate and Opal in main components of sinking particles decompose in settling process. 3) Particle settling rates increase with depth. 4) Ballast minerals (Calcium Carbonate, Opal and Lithogenic materials) have constant organic matters that are protected from remineralization. We will report the results of analyzing the above objective based on this model.

National Institute for Environmental Studies (NIES) operated surface ocean CO
2 observation utilizing cargo ship servicing the North Pacific Ocean mid- and high latitude from 1995. Changing three cargo ship and totally 160 legs of measurement was successfully done until March 2006. Ocean surface pCO
2 increased with that of atmospheric CO
2, however, difference in the increasing rate was observed. Especially for 40 degree north in latitude, western North Pacific showed smaller ocean pCO
2 increasing rate, which suggests increasing ocean sink of CO
2. On the other hand, eastern North Pacific of 40 degree north showed larger increasing rate, which suggests decreasing ocean sink of CO
2.

Noble gas studies show that some of regolith brecciated meteorites contain significant amount of solar gas component. This suggests near surface irradiation history of such meteorites on the parent bodies. Recent neutron capture study on Sm and Gd isotopes also show the early irradiation and regolith processes in aubrite parent body. In this study, Sm and Gd isotopic analyses of gas-rich or regolith brecciated meteorites were performed to find a possibility of the early irradiation on the meteorite parent bodies other than aubrite.
