In order to examine the relationship between the self-perceived health status (SPHS) and the health behaviors which can be carried out to maintain or promote their physical health in their daily lives, a survey was administered to a random sample that consisted of 621 Japanese people between 30 and 95 years of age. The respondents came from a rural small town in Kyushu island. The main results were as follows:
The SPHS as an index of mental health was analyzed from the question: “How is your health compared with the health of other people of your age?”. The result showed the statistically significant correlations between the SPHS and the presence of chronic diseases which should seem as an index of physical health in both sexes. Further-more the positive responses (better than other people of their age) of the SPHS were also significantly related to a few of health practices which included the sleeping hours, balanced nutrition and exercise adherence in both sexes.
