Sculpture Installation Program in Sendai City started in 1978 is known for introducing made-to-measure process. This program was, however, influenced by the sculpture installation on Nusamai Bridge in Kushiro City, Hokkaido, in 1977, which arose from "Peace Sculpture" movement from 1950s. Sendai's program is considered as combination of "Sculpture in Town" movement after 1961 and "Peace Sculpture" movement from 1950s. As a result, Sendai's Sculpture Installation Program was the first of regaining site specificity into "Sculpture in Town" Program. While autonomy was the prime interest of fine art during the cold war, site specificity is often neglected although outdoor sculpture should have it in nature. Sendai's program led the trend to regain site specificity, with Nusamai bridge project as its predecessor.

In this manuscript, we will be reporting on an exhibition and workshop titled "Why Don't You Come to Our Hospital !," which was held at Hinodegaoka Hospital. (August 1-12, 2006) Hinodegaoka Hospital, located in Nishi Tama, Tokyo, holds 263 sickbeds (for general medicine, surgical, and mental-health treatments). There are also rehabilitation and palliative care units. The hospital is responsible for the care of people living in the region. Four artists specializing in different fields became the central part of this exhibition and workshop. Four other artists also contributed their works to the exhibition. The purpose of the exhibition was to help make the hospital a comfortable place for patients, to inform the public about available facilities, and to improve the overall aesthetics of the typical hospital environment, all through the healing power of art. Visitors also learned about the origins of the art itself. As a result, we were able to create an opportunity to have many patients experience art through participating in the workshop. In addition, people who were not familiar with the hospital came to see the exhibition ; thus, we were able to help open the door to the hospital. This project became our first step to introduce art in hospitals in different ways.
