This survey was to study the use of “Gann, ” Japanese journal for cancer research, outside Japan by counting the citations in foreign scientific journals of the selected articles in “Gann” published in 1963. “Gann” is the leading journal for cancer research in Japan, and papers by many Japanese researchers are published in “Gann, ” which is used most heavily for the research of cancer throughout Japan. For example, “Gann” is most frequently cited in the “Collected Papers from the National Cancer Center Research Institute (Tokyo), vol. 1 and 2 (1962/1965, 1966).” Therefore, it is our most concern to know how “Gann” is used outside Japan.
According to this citation counting survey, “Gann” is not used frequently outside Japan. In only 14 foreign journals “Gann” is cited 23 times during 1964 to 1966. They age very few compared with the results for “Cancer Research” and “the Journal of Biochemistry.”
On the contorary, “The Journal of Biochemistry” is cited in 38 foreign journals for life science 67 times. It may be said that “the Journal of Biochemistry” is used outside Japan far more widely than “Gann”.
