Background: Spleen tyrosine kinase (SYK) is a protein related to various diseases. Aberrant SYK expression often causes the progression and initiation of several diseases including cancer and autoimmune diseases. Despite the importance of inhibiting SYK and identifying candidate inhibitors, no clinically effective inhibitors have been reported to date. Therefore, there is a need for novel SYK inhibitors. Results: Candidate compounds were investigated using in silico screening by chooseLD, which simulates ligand docking to proteins. Using this system, known inhibitors were correctly recognized as compounds with high affinity to SYK. Furthermore, many compounds in the DrugBank database were newly identified as having high affinity to the ATP-binding sites in the kinase domain with a similar affinity to previously reported inhibitors. Conclusions: Many drug candidate compounds from the DrugBank database were newly identified as inhibitors of SYK. Because compounds registered in the DrugBank are expected to have fewer side effects than currently available compounds, these newly identified compounds may be clinically useful inhibitors of SYK for the treatment of various diseases.

Tabletop displays serve as shared displays and co-located workspaces for multiple people. People often place physical objects such as mockup models on the table as an intuitive communication tool for tabletop displays. However, current tabletop displays have limitations in terms of image presentation: The display area is limited to horizontal surfaces, and the view-dependent appearance of the shared images is not provided. The goal of this paper is to solve these limitations by combining dual-sided vertical mid-air images and horizontal image projection to enhance visual presentation. For this purpose, our optical design employed a plate-shaped imaging optics as a tabletop surface and diffusion control film as a projection screen. The proposed system, “HoVerTable,” provides both vertical and horizontal images to two users facing one another. In this paper, we describe the details of our optical design. A user study confirmed that providing text captions dependent on users' viewpoints is effective for text annotation in a shared tabletop environment. With HoVerTable, users can enjoy interactive applications such as a mixed reality showcase.

Efficient market hypothesis is widely accepted in financial market studies and entails the unpredictability of future stock prices. In this study, we show that a simple analysis can classify short-term stock price changes with an 82.9% accuracy. Our analysis uses the order book information of high-frequency trading. The volume of high-frequency trading, which is responsible for short-term stock price changes, is increasing dramatically; therefore, our study suggests the importance of analyzing short-term market fluctuations, an aspect that is not well studied in conventional market theories. The experimental results also suggest the importance of the new data representation and analysis methods we propose, neither of which have been thoroughly investigated in conventional financial studies.

We propose a per-frame upper body pose estimation method for sports players captured in low-resolution team sports videos. Using the head-center-aligned upper body region appearance in each frame from the head tracker, our framework estimates (1) 2D spine pose, composed of the head center and the pelvis center locations, and (2) the orientation of the upper body in each frame. Our framework is composed of three steps. In the first step, the head region of the subject player is tracked with a standard tracking-by-detection technique for upper body appearance alignment. In the second step, the relative pelvis center location from the head center is estimated by our newly proposed poselet-regressor in each frame to obtain spine angle priors. In the last step, the body orientation is estimated by the upper body orientation classifier selected by the spine angle range. Owing to the alignment of the body appearance and the usage of multiple body orientation classifiers conditioned by the spine angle prior, our method can robustly estimate the body orientation of a player with a large variation of visual appearances during a game, even during side-poses or self-occluded poses. We tested the performance of our method in both American football and soccer videos.
