This paper describes the lithology and petrography of tephras in marine sediment cores from off Wakasa Bay, central Japan Sea. Major element compositions of glass shards in the tephras of the off Wakasa Bay sediment cores and late Pleistocene to Holocene standard tephras from the Japan Sea sediment cores were measured using SEM-EDS. As a result, the K-Ah, TRG1, TRG2, KsP, Wks1, AT, A-Os, U-Ym, Wks2, SAN1, Aso-4, and K-Tz tephras were identified in the Wakasa Bay marine sediment cores in descending order. In this paper, we newly describe the existence of the Wakasa 1 and 2 tephra and A-Os tephras. The tephrastratigraphy of the off Wakasa Bay sediment cores constructed in this paper provides important stratigraphic horizons for comparison with other marine and lacustrine sediment cores.
