This paper presents a method of a real time simulator for a computer aided design of microwave industrial products, in particular, for a shape design. According to progress of PC performance and simulation technology, numerical simulations are widely used in microwave product designs such as electromagnetic noise analysis, high frequency filter and so on. However, iterative microwave simulations for finding appropriate microwave product shapes require a large computer cost. It is shown that the real time microwave simulator based on the FDTD method can reduce a total simulation cost of the shape design to unify all stages of pre-process, calculation and post-process in the simulation.

New boundary conditions to simulate the Karman vortices were developed for the Moving Particle Semi-implicit (MPS) method. These boundary conditions enable us to analyze the wake region of a cylinder without an unnatural cavity observed in past analyses. Karman vortices that were present behind a circular cylinder and a square cylinder in flows were successfully simulated in two dimensions using the MPS method with the developed boundary conditions. The simulated drag coefficients and Strouhal numbers were close to those of the finite difference method and experiments.

Personal mobility vehicles (PMVs), such as an inverted-pendulum vehicle, have been attracting attention as next-generation vehicles for individual use. However, when PMVs travel in pedestrian flows, it is necessary to consider the safety and comfort of pedestrians. This paper investigated a simulation model considering the interaction between multiple PMVs and pedestrians, and analyzed the effects of PMVs in pedestrian flows using the concept of personal space. Furthermore, we proposed an assistance system for PMVs in order to ensure comfort for pedestrians in the presence of PMVs. The simulation results revealed that the avoidance angle and the velocity of PMVs significantly affected the invasion of pedestrians' PSs, and the effectiveness of the assistance system was clearly confirmed.

Shallow water flows in multiply connected open channel network are frequently encountered in hydro-environmental problems. Simulating such flows practically reduces to solving the 1-D shallow water equations (1-D SWEs) in locally 1-D open channel networks. A key in solving the 1-D SWEs is physically consistent numerical treatment of junctions and bends, which has not been discussed in depth in the conventional researches. This paper performs numerical comparisons of shallow water models with different internal boundary conditions (IBCs) at junctions and bends, focusing on their applications to real problems. The computational results show significant impacts of the IBCs on the simulated hydraulic processes, such as flow transition, flood arrival time, and peak discharge.

To understand simulation data from the perspective of multivariables is important in numerical simulation study. This study proposes a new multi-dimensional transfer function that enables users to extract and visualize characteristic features with their empirical and intuitive judgment. In the proposed method, data points that represent characteristic features are selected in a couple of 2-dimensional scatter plots. Extracted data in each 2-variable space of multivariate datasets are assigned to different color components such as hue, saturation and/or brightness, respectively, in order to classify and specify the characteristic features. We applied the method to high-resolution ocean simulation data with the advice of oceanographers. As a result of case studies, ocean currents and eddies are intuitively extracted and clearly represented with their physical properties such as current speed, temperature and salinity.

In this paper, we propose Hybrid Agent Tutor Model (HATM) simulated with robotics to enhance an e-Learning system for education field, especially science and technology. We applied advanced simulation technology and interactive robotics into the proposed e-Learning system. In this system, hardware robot agents in real world and software agents in virtual one were defined as the Hybrid Agent Tutors (HATs), and will perform interactive relationship so as to support learners to get more efficient educational contents. Based on this concept, we configured a simple prototype system to show frame work according to noble “Qualia” and “Awareness”, and estimated the efficiency of this system in the e-Learning.

This paper presents an approach to control a periodic up-and-down yoyo motion with a robot arm which has a parallel link mechanism. For controlling it, an integrated model of the robot arm and the yoyo is developed which describes their mutual interference, and a controller which can compensate energy loss with the yoyo motion is designed based on the integrated model. The effectiveness of the proposed controller is verified through a numerical simulation. Its results show that the robot arm attains the continuous up-and-down yoyo motion and the trajectories of the rotation and the up-and-down motion are periodic. The proposed approach is effective in controlling the periodic up-and-down yoyo motion in conclusion.

Recent advances in simulation in science and engineering are focusing on automatic measuring of human-feelings about a product design by using Kansei Engineering words. Iyashi is a Japanese word used to describe a peculiar phenomenon that is mentally soothing, but is yet to be clearly defined. This paper explores the analysis of Electro Encephalogram (EEG) brain signals (Alpha, Beta) as a method to determine when a stimulus (face images) generates Iyashi in a person and produces good feelings. NeuroSky B3 Headband is used as a device to obtain the EEG signals and Holographic Neural Networks (HNN) are evaluated to predict the level of Iyashi. Nine data dimensionality reduction algorithms for brain signals are explored to improve the level of prediction of the HNN. The experimental results show that the percent of prediction with HNN can be increased in more than 10% if data reduction methods are applied to Beta brain waves.
