Abstract Fukuoka Dental College has begun summative evaluation for clinical practical training students who have participated in clinical practice since 2014. In 2015 we carried out four tasks, one of which is “to be able to properly instruct the use of oral cleaning tools” managed by the Department of Odontology (Periodontology Section and Operative Dentistry/Endodontology Section). Based on the plaque control record (PCR) results of patients visiting the Fukuoka Dental College, Medical and Dental Hospital for periodontal maintenance, the students gave explanations to the patients for 20 minutes. The oral hygiene instructions were carried out using blank paper for explanation, a jaw model and oral cleaning tools. Immediately after the oral care instruction, feedback was given to the students by two instructors. Patients were asked to fill in a questionnaire. The results of the questionnaire showed that, regarding what the patients seek from dentists or students, 26% seek “skill” and 17% seek “experience”. This examination suggested that students gain strong awareness by receiving feedback from the supervisor immediately after the examination, and this strong awareness helps the students become better dentists.

In the future, teaching methods for clinical practical training need to be improved to obtain more advanced skills and rich experience.
