Abstract Preparation and improvement for clinical internship have recently been arranged at each dental college and faculty of dentistry. The experience gained during clinical internship undoubtedly results in great efficiency for dental students, and the same is true for post-graduate dental clinical training. On the other hand, the agreement and understanding of patients are essential to carry out substantial clinical training. This study aimed to grasp the current condition of clinical internship and post-graduate dental clinical training implemented at the Medical and Dental Hospital, Niigata University, and to obtain the resources to develop them. Data for the last five years concerning clinical internship and post-graduate dental clinical training were examined. The average numbers of students and trainee dentists were 43 and 24, respectively. Each student practiced on 125 patients during their clinical internship period and each trainee dentist practiced on 279 patients during their training program. The number of new patients was also higher for trainee dentists than the students and it was shown that it is easier for patients to understand post-graduate dental clinical training. However, it was deemed reasonable for both the students and the trainee dentists taking account of the feasibility of giving them practice. It is considered necessary to maintain the present condition at a minimum and to prepare both clinical training programs while exchanging information in order to improve their efficiency.
