Hokkaido, one of the largest islands in the North of Japan, was a sparsely populated district before Com. Perry's visit to Japan, 1853. But after the gate was opened many foreigners-American, Engliish, etc. -began to call at Hokkaido. We owe the cultivation there to many foreigners, especially to Americans as our advisors and teachers in the 19th century.
