In 1828 an important book was publishedin America, that was Noah Webster's firstedition of American Dictionary of English Language.
Through this dictionary along with hisspelling-book he did more than any otherindividual to give the American nation anindependent property in the English languge. His speller was the world-wide bestseller in the 19th century not only in hiscountry but also in Japan. After Com. Perry's visit to Japan, most ambitious Japaneseboys began to study English and theylearned their ABC by his spelling-book.
