University PE is expected to play a pivotal role in the building of lifelong sports as an intermediary between society, the ultimate goal of students, and schools. Therefore,it is critical for teachers to provide better classes by making efforts to improve their teaching ability while reflecting on their everyday classes. It is also indispensable for universities, more than elementary, junior and senior high schools,to conduct researches that ascertain the process of formation of teachers' teaching ability and enable to put the findings to practical use. Researches from the teachers' standpoint have been actively conducted in the past,in the form of educational skill and class management studies that view teaching as interaction between teachers and students. In recent years, research methodology has centered on the ALT−PE observation system and the use of reproduced cognition data obtained while watching VTR images depicting the entire learning space. In addition to the conventional method of using the reproduced cognition data obtained while watching the VTR images depicting the entire learning space, this study used a CCD camera that was placed on the teacher's head to capture “the class from his/her point of view” and its VTR images to obtain the reproduced cognition data, which proved an effective method to bring out useful reproduced cognition.
Compared with the reproduced cognition data obtained while watching VTR images depicting the entire learning space, the VTR images depicting the teachers' point of view were able to bring out more vivid comments on the class as exemplified in the teacher's frequent comment of “I'm watching here.” The study also showed that the method was effective in bringing out not only verbal instructions that can be used as quantitative measurements of teachers' ability and cognition that can be confirmed visually, but also more detailed and deeper cognition statements. The detailed and deeper cognition obtained in this study revealed that experienced teachers maintain the class dynamism not by direct, negative feedback, but by positive approaches, have preliminary cognition obtained in advance of a class, and conduct a class by traversing spatially and temporally between individuals and the entire class.
