The purpose of this study is to find out the determinants of climbers'environment-conscious behavior in the mountains. This study can be categorized as a demonstration research to which Hirose's psychological model (1994) is applied. As far as I can search the Internet for the documents and papers in this field, both in Japanese and in English, no report has been found which is based on a certain psychological model and refers to the determinants of climbers'environment-conscious behavior. Therefore, it would not be too much to say that this study has a meaningful aspect.
According to Hirose, the decision-making process for environment-conscious behavior has two phases;the first phase is forming pro-environmental attitude based on three environmental cognitions (cognitions of risk, responsibility and efficacy), the second is evaluating three characteristics of the environment-conscious behavior (feasibility, cost and social norm). The results are summarized as follows.
    (1) Climbers'pro-environmental attitude is affected by efficacy and responsibility.
    (2) Climbers environment-conscious behavior is affected by risk, responsibility and cost.
    (3) The effects of responsibility and cost are greater than those of risk.
    (4) Climbers'environment-conscious behavior is not directly affected by their pro-environmental attitude.
