Trial processing of carbon/thermoplastic (APC-2) composites is conducted. An accurate control of temperature at an adhesion phase and a cooling phase is very important for better properties. Desirable mechanical properties of APC-2 are shown through experiments. Transverse failure strain is much higher than that of CF/epoxy. Interlaminar fracture toughness tests by DCB specimens demonstrate extremely high GIc, more than 20 times of CF/epoxy. Multiple heating and pressing processes onto DCB specimens give only a little degradation in GIc. Tensile tests of ±45°specimens exhibit good damage tolerance and high energy absorption properties.

Fatigue tests were carried out on single edge notched specimens of SMC composite under cyclic uniaxial tensile load. AE signals were detected during fatigue tests and the variation of compliance of the specimen was measured. As a result, it was found that the damage near the notch front increases markedly in the first and last stages of the number of load cycles and being less in the intermediate stage. The AE signals were able to classify into two groups by the spectrum analysis of the AE signals. One can be the signals which arise from the damage growth and the other the signals of the damage closure. Finally, on the basis of the assumption of a linear relationship between the compliance and the accumulated AE energy corresponding to damage growth, the variation of compliance was predicted. Good agreement was found between the measured and predicted compliances.

It is necessary for designers to know the values of material properties such as strength when they design structures. Such material data are generally obtained by looking over some mate-rials handbook or by carrying out some material tests. These tasks are not so efficient. Especially, for composite materials, that are one of advanced materials, a lot of material data have not been accumulated so for, and many data are scattered in companies, laboratories, and universities. Consequently, the development of the fact data base for composite materials, which collects and stores these data and gives us necessary and appropriate data, seems to be an urgent necessity. This paper deals with the trial development of the fact data base system for composite materials. The data model is decided to be relational but it has also hierachcal and network structures on account of the special nature of composites data. The data sheet for data input is made after investigating the each items of materials properties and perform-ing the trial entries by many reseachers. The computer programs for input, search, and out-put are made and tested. The hard ware is a desktop computer (FACOM 9450-II) with 20 MB hard disk, which constitutes sub data base and will be connected to a large computer of a data base center in Tsukuba.
