Results of experimental and analytical investigations of the strength and the behaviors of thin (6-13 mm) high-strength mortar composite reinforced with impregnated continuous carbon fiber (CF) are presented. As the result of the measurement of the mechanical properties of the CF and the mortar, it was shown that compressive modulus and character coefficient of compressive stress block (K1. K3) of the mortar much differed from those of the high-strength concrete. Then the common methods of computing flexural strength for steel bar reinforced concrete (RC) were applied for the mortar composite. Utilizing the measured data of the CF and the mortar, the calculated flexural strength, balanced reinforcement ratio and failure mode of the composite specimens agreed with these of the observed. By the applicable computing formulae, two new ways to obtain more higher flexural strength of the composite are suggested ; one is to make the ultimate compressive strain of mortar higher and the other is to use high modulus CF. A new map is proposed to survey the optimum combination of CF and mortar.

This paper describes the damage process of a composite reinforced by plain woven glass cloth under O-tension fatigue loading. The study is summarized as follows. The fatigue process can be divided into three stages similarly to the case of multi-directional laminates. The initial stage is the stage where the modulus decreases rapidly. This rapid decay is caused by debondings in the weft and matrix cracks. Through the end of the initial stage to the beginning of second stage, the characteristic damage state is observed. This state should be called as the micro-CDS if compared with the CDS for multi-directional laminates. After the rapid modulus decay, debondings in the warp and micro-delaminations between weft and warp occur. In the second stage, the modulus decreases gradually mainly due to them. In a few cycles just before failure (final stage), it changes rapidly again. The concept of the 'Unit Cell' is proposed for understanding the damage of woven composites. It consists of one cross-over of weft and warp of the fabric. In the final stage, the damage of 'Unit Cell's is accelerated like chain reaction. For woven composites, the damage of each 'Unit Cell' and its distribution control the total fatigue damage of the material.

Composite materials have advanced characteristics which make possible to design their properties. These advantages, however, often cause difficulty to utilize composite materials for products designers who have been familiar with conventional isotropic materials. In this paper, a concept of intellectual access system for the composite materials facts databases (IDAM : Intellectual Database Access Manager) was proposed. The IDAM offers suitable data of the composite materials properties through retrieval of the facts database or simulations.
