    The dynamic characteristic of the FRP is important for the application of robot arm etc. In this work, we applied damping capacity conception to torsional damped oscillation of laminated composite cylinder and suggested a method to estimate the torsional damping characteristic. An experiment was conducted to verify the theory and this calculation method. The good agreement obtained between the theoretical and the experimental values for seven types of laminated composite cylinders, these being unidirectional (0°, 90°) plies, cross-plies (±15°, ±30°, ±45°, ±60°, +75°) plies. It shows that the mathematical technique developed here is satisfactory for predicting the damping behaviors of laminated composite cylinders. Torsional damping characteristic of laminated composite cylinder varies with fiber orientation angle.

    This paper presents an experimental investigation of the relationship between the bearing strength and the damage progress behavior in mechanically fastened composite structures. CF/ PIXA and CF/Epoxy material systems were selected for the strength comparison, and a simple and highly functional measurement system using a non-contact electro-optical extensometer was adopted to evaluate the bearing strength. A static tensile test for a double lap bolted joint was performed. During tests, the fracture process under the load-deformation response was monitored using the acoustic emission measurement. Some of the specimens were unloaded at different loading levels, in order to assess the damage progress and failure mechanisms using soft X-radiograph and SEM observation of the internal damage. Based on these experimental observations, it can be concluded that the kink band, delamination and fiber-matrix shearing failure formed the major failure modes of the large-scale shear damage. The washer area and bolt clamping conditions should have an influence on the damage progress.

    Both the source location and fracture-type classification in a fiber reinforced hollow cylindrical rod (fishing rod) under local surface compression are studied by analyzing the guided wave acoustic emission (AEs). The source locations in the axial direction of the rod were determined by using the arrival time differences of F(1, 1)-mode guided waves at 0.20 MHz. AE events monitored during surface compression of the rod were classified into four fracture types, i.e., fiber splitting and fiber breakage at inner and outer surfaces by taking the cross-correlation of signals with artificial AE waves produced by laser-induced thermal expansion and break down. The cause of major damages of 250 mm-long fishing rod were estimated to be the fiber splitting and breakage at the loading point.
