We have developed an automated Japanese essay scoring system named Jess. The system evaluates an essay from three features: (1) Rhetoric - syntactic variety, or the use of various structures in the arrangement of phrases, clauses, and sentences (2) Organization - characteristics associated with the orderly presentation of idea, such as rhetorical features and linguistic cues (3) Contents -vocabulary related to the topic, such as relevant information and precise or specialized vocabulary. The final evaluated score is calculated by reducing an point assigned by learning editorial columns in MAINICHI daily news paper. Writing diagnosis will be also indicated.

For tests of dimensionality in multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA), three types of test criteria (Likelihood-Ratio-type, Lawley-Hotelling-type and Bartlett-Nanda-Pillai-type) are popular. However, as is well known, these criteria depend on nuisance parameters. Yoshida et al. (2002) suggested new criteria, which are upper bound for null distribution of the above-mentionted three types criteria and do not depend on the nuisance parameters under elliptical populations. Furthermore, it was proved that the upper bounds are upper limits for null distributions of LR-type and LH-type. In this paper, we consider tests of dimensionality under multivariate t populations, and show that the upper bounds are also upper limits for null distributions of LR-type and LH-type.

In this paper, we propose an imputation method for the number of samples in cells which is suppressed to prevent information disclosure when a contingency table derived from a statistical survey is released, and we perform a simulation to evaluate the method. Then we introduce its implementation to an online system to release the result of a survey. By using this function, users of released data can save the trouble of the imputation.

We introduce a nonlinear regression modeling strategy, using a regularized local likelihood method. The local likelihood method is effective for analyzing data with complex structure. It might be, however, pointed out that the stability of local likelihood estimators is not guranteed in the case that the structure of system is quite complex. In order to overcome this difficulty, we propose the regularized local likelihood method with polynomial function which unites local likelihood and regularization. A crucial issue in constructing nonlinear regression models is the choice of a smoothing parameter, the degree of polynomial and regularization parameter. In order to evaluate constructed models estimated by regularized local likelihood, we derive a model selection criterion from an information-theoretic point of view. The information criterion is compared with criteria proposed previously such as cross-validation, generalized cross-validation and so on. Real data analysis and Monte Carlo experiments are conducted to examine the performance of our modeling strategy. The results clearly show that our nonlinear modeling technique performs well in various situations, and that clear improvements are achieved by employing the regularization.

With evolution of PIV experimental technologies, the needs for high performance computer resources, large scale storage system and advanced visualization engine are getting higher. However, it would be a severe burden for the researchers to prepare such high performance, large scale, and advanced resources by themselves. On the other hand, the necessity of collaborative research environment becomes higher day by day in the domain of flow field. The PIV Virtual Laboratory (PIV-VL) has been established and PIV-VL is under development for establishment of PIV collaborative research environment, using Grid technology and multi users visualization technique. It is shown that application of PIV-VL to the calculation and visualization of three dimensional PIV experiment for delta wing is useful.
