Seasoning clay with water and straw prior construction〔=NERIOKI〕is the traditional method for production of wall clay and it is said that the duration of NERIOKI affects the durability and the capability to retain water. However recently the construction method has faded because it requires large site and long storage and construction period. We had observed changes clay and straw and examined effects Of NERIOKI for material strength and equilibrium moisture content. The results are as follows:
(1)The equilibrium moisture contents of test specimens having 34weeks NERIOKI is lower than ones having 3~11weeks in high relative humidity conditions.
(2) Compressive strength decreases as relative humidity increases. Especially test specimens without straw show this tendency strongly.
(3)Shear strength Of test specimens without straw is three times higher than ones with straw of 3~11weeks NERIOKI and two times higher than ones with straw of 34weeks NERIOKI.
