CD30, a member of the TNF/NGF receptor superfamily, is firstly thought to be a specific marker for Hodgkin's and Reed-Sternberg's cells. Recent studies revealed that its function is not restricted to a tumor marker of Hodgkin and Reed-Sternberg's cells. It might play an important role in the immune system and the cascade which would lead to the apoptotic phenomenon. Nowadays, the expression of CD30 is thought to have relation to various diseases, not only Hodgkin's disease and anaplastic large cell lymphoma (ALCL), but also atopic diseases and AIDS. This comes from the fact that CD30 expression has correlate to the Th2 cytokine production.
The pathway of CD30/CD30L signal is now being revealed, which involves the TNF receptor associated factor (TRAF)-1, TRAF-2, TRAF-3, similar to other member of this family. However, the exact role of CD30 and its regulatory mechanism for the expression is not clear yet. In this review we summarized the latest information of CD30.

This report presents a case of Lennert's lymphoma in which endothelial and lymphoreticular cells were studied by electron microscopy. Ultrastructually all of tumor cells contained distinctive rough and smooth endoplasmic reticulum and dense bodies. In the endothelial cell, the fibrillar structures by Tanaka were observed that are continous and at intervals show increased density giving a beaded appearance. The tumor cells divided into the following four types 1) lymphoblast, 2) plasma blast, 3) proplasmacyte and 4) histiocytic or epithelial cell like cells. All types of the cells are considered to be various stages of their maturation destinent along the same cell.

We previously reported the presence of Langerhans cells (LCs) in the squamous metaplastic epithelium of the rat urinary bladder induced by vitamin A deficiency. Here, we examined the presence or absence of LCs in the iliac lymph nodes which are regional lymph nodes of the urinary bladder. In the later stage of squamous metaplasia of the urinary bladder, LCs first appeared in the regional lymph nodes. To distinguish LCs from other dendritic cells which were also positive for anti-protein kinase C type II antibody, we must confirm the presence of Birbeck granules by electron microscopy. The existence of LCs in the profound lymph nodes have not been reported to date. However, we detected LCs in the profound lymph nodes in this study. We conclude that LCs can also appear in the profound lymph nodes directly draining from the metaplastic squamous epithelium.

We report a case of Lennert's lymphoma with erythema on the right buttock. An 80-year-old woman was admitted to our hospital with a complaint of swelling of her both legs. She first experienced left inguinal lymphoadenopathy in 1994 and a diagnosis of reactive lymphoadenitis was made by a lymph node biopsy specimen. In January 1995, lymphoadenopathy recurred on her right-inguinal region and erythema on her right-buttock. Skin biopsy of a macula on the buttock showed perivascular infiltrates that were composed mainly atypical large lymphocytes and histiocytic cells.
In a specimen from lymph node, small lymphoid cells mixed with focal aggregates of epithelioid cells were observed. Atypical lymphocytes were stained with MT1, but not epithelioid cells.
