We present the position and shape identification analysis of a cavity using the displacement data assumed the hammering test. To solve the cavity identification problem, the adjoint variable and the finite element methods are employed. To obtain the optimal cavity position and shape, the random tunneling algorithm is applied. In this study, numerical experiment results focus on the accuracy of the identified position and the shape. According to numerical experiments, the accuracy of the identification result was improved by using the random tunneling algorithm.

In this paper we propose a method to identify low molecular weight ions by measuring their absorption speed using intensity interrogation method SPR. We used two ion exchange membranes, Nafion and Flemion, which have different functional groups and show different absorption characteristics to the ions. By measuring the differences in absorption speeds of two membranes, we demonstrated that types and density of 1.7 mM to 34 mM K+, Na+, and Ca2+ ions can be identified.

Our previous studies suggested that electrical stimulation with random pulse train (RdPT) waveform have a potential to enhance osteogenesis and mineralization of osteoblasts in vitro. However, the effect of RdPT on collagen crosslink formation, which contributes improving the mechanical properties of bone matrix created by the cells, have not investigated yet. The objective of this research is to investigate the effect of RdPT on collagen crosslink formation by osteoblasts in vitro. To this end, lysyl oxidase (LOX) enzyme activity of osteoblasts was analyzed and insolubility of collagen was evaluated by measuring hydroxyproline (HyP) concentration. MC3T3-E1 osteoblastic cells were stimulated electrically by two types of electrical stimulation pattern, periodic pulse train (PrPT) and RdPT. RdPT increased the percentage of insoluble collagen over cultured period comparing to PrPT and control. Additionally, RdPT also increased in LOX activity on day 21 when compared with control. These findings suggest that the random electrical stimulation pattern can enhance the mechanical strength of bone matrix through promoting intermolecular collagen crosslinking formation.

This study examines the tensile properties of cellulose microfiber (CMF) / maleic acid polypropylene (MAPP) /polypropylene (PP) composites and cellulose nanofiber (CNF) /MAPP/PP composites. To form interface between cellulose and PP, surface of cellulose was coated with a hydrophobizing agent (HA). HA helps cellulose dispersion in PP. MAPP that having interface modification effect added in PP to improve cellulose dispersion. CMFs have a length of 10μm or more, and diameters of 1μm or more. CNFs have a length of 20~30μm, and diameters of 100nm. Using twin-screw extruder operating at 200rpm and 200°C, CMF/MAPP/PP composites and CNF/MAPP/PP composites were prepared by melt-kneading. Tensile tests were performed to examine the tensile properties of CMF/MAPP/PP composites and CNF/MAPP/PP composites. The yield stress of CMF/MAPP/PP composites improved with the increase of CMF content, but the yield stress decreased with the increase of CNF for CNF/MAPP/PP composites.

This study examines the tensile and impact fracture properties of polypropylene (PP) composites containing cellulose nanofibers (CNF). Two types of CNF with different lengths were used to assess the effect of fiber length of CNF on tensile and impact fracture properties. CNF have a length of 10 μm or more and a diameter of 20 nm. We developed a dry powder CNF with a moisture content of 3wt% or less. Dry powder CNF can be highly dispersed in the thermoplastic polymer such as PP resins by twin-screw extruder. Using twin-screw extruder operating at 130rpm and 200°C, CNF/PP composites were prepared by melt-kneading. The dry powder CNF in PP resin are easily dispersed by melt-kneading using twin-screw extruder. The failure strain of 0.1wt%CNF-s/PP, 0.5wt%CNF-s/PP and 0.1wt%CNF-L/PP composites were increased as compared with neat PP resin. Moreover, the izod impact strength of CNF-s/PP and CNF-L/PP composites were increased as compared with neat PP resin. It is clear that addition of CNF improves the toughness of PP resin at low CNF content.

Polymer composites with high thermal conductivity offer new possibilities for thermal management in electric systems. An approach of current interest to improve thermal conductivity of polymer composites is the addition of hybrid nano and micro fillers with high thermal conductivity. The objective of this paper is to study thermal conductivity of the epoxy composites with nano and micro fillers by using Digimat-FE software. Representative volume element (RVE) models with random close-packed structures of nano and micro fillers were obtained, and finite element analysis was performed to evaluate thermal conductivity of polymer composites. Effect of addition of alumina nanowire to closepacked structure of micro fillers on the thermal conductivity of polymer composites was discussed.

This study examines on the fracture properties of short aramid fiber (AF) reinforced polyamide66 (PA66) composites. M-aramid fiber (Conex) and P-aramid fiber (Technora) were used. Three-point bending fracture tests and tensile fracture tests were conducted to evaluate the fracture properties of AF/PA66 composites. As the fiber length of AF increased, the strain energy at the maximum load increased. Conex/PA66 composites showed brittle fracture behavior. On the other hand, Technora/PA66 composites showed ductile fracture behavior. As the specimen size decreased, the loading rate dependence increased, and the specific strain energy at the maximum load of Technora/PA66 composites tended to decrease.

The study examines the self-healing of spread carbon fiber (SCF) /epoxy (EP) laminates containing fillers. The fillers used in this study were cellulose nanofiber (CNF) and talc. The diameter and fiber length of CNF are 20nm and 20-30µm, respectively. The thickness and platelet size of talc are 0.2µm and 3.0µm, respectively. Healing is accomplished by incorporating a microencapsulated healing agent and catalyst. Self-healing is demonstrated on short beam shear specimens and the healing efficiency was evaluated by the strain energies of virgin and healed specimens. The result showed that the healing efficiency of self-healing SCF/EP/CNF laminates increased as compared with that of self-healing SCF/EP laminates whereas the interlaminar shear strength did not change with CNF addition. The healing efficiency of self-healing SCF/EP/talc laminates increased with increases in talc content. The damaged area of self-healing SCF/EP laminates with observed large scale crack. However, the damaged areas of self-healing SCF/EP/CNF and SCF/EP/talc laminates observed many small scale cracks.

Magneto-rheological fluid is one of the functional fluids. When a magnetic field is applied from the outside, the particles form a chain structure called a cluster. As a result, the apparent viscosity can be changed. By applying this characteristic, it is considered to be applied to torque transmission devices such as clutches and brakes. However, magnetic viscous fluids have a problem that physical properties change due to temperature change. The quantitative relationships and mechanisms are not clear. In this study, we conducted a viscosity measurement experiment and a visualization experiment using the temperature of the magnetorheological fluid as a factor, and verified the temperature decrease of the magnetorheological fluid and its mechanism by changing the components of the magnetorheological fluid. The purpose is to clarify. As a result, it was found that the change in the viscosity of the magnetorheological fluid was related to the change in the flow area of the particles.

The transient behavior of aircraft engine is critical and a rapid thrust response is always the prime requirement. In this paper, the simulation of transient response of a small-scale turbojet engine has been carried out based on the component matching theory. The equilibrium running calculations can be performed based on satisfying the requirements for compatibility of flow and work between the components such as compressor, turbine and propelling nozzle. During transient operation, a gas turbine can be considered to satisfy compatibility of flow but not of work, and the excess of power applied to a rotor can be used to calculate its acceleration. A model has been developed to investigate the transient operation of a turbojet engine. Based on the proposed model, the calculations have been conducted and the obtained results are presented in this report.

It is well known that the bleeding of compressed air is a method to avoid unstable state such as surging in a compressor. The turbojet engine runs only at the point where each engine component satisfies matching conductions based on the matching theory. The change of engine performance by bleeding compressed air is estimated using the Performance Analysis Tool of Gas Turbine (GTPAT) based on matching theory. The air bleed holes have been provided at the compressor exit of a turbojet engine. In this paper, the performance of turbo jet engine has been estimated by using GTPAT, and the obtained results have been compared with the data obtained by experiments.

Para ice hockey is an adaptive form of ice hockey used for athletes who have a disability which could be from limb loss, spinal cord injury, or a condition such as cerebral palsy. Athletes use a special sled called ‘a sledge’ to play para ice hockey. Because para ice hockey is a very physical sport, a sledge needs high strength and stiffness. Most of Japanese athletes in para ice hockey use foreign sledges made of Al alloy. Their sledge is so heavy and bad handling for Japanese athletes. Repairing damaged sledge takes a lot of time and money because of transport to foreign manufacturing. Thus, Japanese athletes need a domestic sledge with lightweight, high-strength, high rigidity. So, focusing on Mg alloy which has lower density than Al alloy, a domestic sledge made of Mg alloy was prototyped. The purpose of this study is to further reduce the weight of the prototype sledge using optimization analysis.

Tensile adhesion strength tests were carried out to evaluate interfacial strength between hydroxyapatite (HAp) coating layer and titanium (Ti) alloy substrate of HAp coated specimens, especially influence post heat treatment. In addition, residual stress evaluation was performed by curvature measurement during substrate cutting based on the curvature method. Furthermore, in order to verify the modification of the HAp coating itself, the HAp surface hardness test was performed on the HAp free-standing specimens. Finally, the magnitude of thermal stress caused by cooling after thermal spraying was estimated from the heat transfer - static structure coupled analysis by a general-purpose finite element method program. As the results, a correlation between post heat treatment temperature and interface strength was shown. Moreover, residual stress in the HAp coating layer was significant decreased by applying 500℃ post heat treatment, in contrast to 300℃ post heat treatment. From the viewpoint of coating integrity, it is thought that reducing the residual stress by post heat treatment is useful method.

The aim of this study is to reveal mechanism and evaluate the behavior of initial generation of wear particles at the interface of hydroxyapatite sprayed coating with simulated bone simulated bone deposited on Ti substrate. Recently, artificial hip joint replacement in orthopedic surgery is increasing, in order to improve the quality of life in aging society. After long term using of artificial hip joint, the loosening has been occurred and this problem causes the fretting wear and generates wear particles to damage it is application and life services. However, the relationship between wear particle generation behavior and cytotoxicity in the biological environment is unknown. Fretting wear was conducted under cyclic loading and the cytotoxicity mechanism of wear particle will be explicated. In-situ fretting fatigue toxicity test in vitro demonstrated that gradually wear particles ejected according to delamination and then the corresponding cytotoxicity to removal of osteoblasts were observed. The much wear particles were observed, the worsened toxicity to the cells were observed.

This study aims at observing fretting wear interaction with crack initiation and crack propagation behavior during fretting fatigue process of Ti-6Al-4V alloy. Progress of the fretting wear significantly affected by the stiffness of pad materials. Higher wear resistance of pad material caused heavy localized wear damges which can enhance stress concentration at the contact edge ,which may lead to early crack initiation. Mechanism of Fretting wear which has usually been ignored and its extensive influence on fatigue crack initiaion was revealed.

Many geometric patterns are seen in the natural world, including patterns that take form spontaneously by self-assembly. Among these, the “wrinkle” structure is very commonly seen on the surface of a leaf, on skin and brain. Additional mechanical factors in the outer layer of our cells play a large role in the formation and the morphogenetic process of our bodies and tissues. The concave-convex surface structure of wrinkles in the brain and that of folds in the intestines are both determined by the mechanical balance between the surface and cytoskeleton. In our study, these morphogenetic processes will be mimicked and the surface buckling phenomenon will be used to create a variety of minute wrinkle structures on the surface of silicon rubber. Moreover, we adopted wrinkle to prepare various application fields, such as SERS sensing film and superhydrophobic surface.

Engineering of complex 3D structures is a highly challenging task for development of materials with novel optical properties, tissue engineering scaffolds, elements of micro- and nanoelectronics devices. Three-dimensional materials can be fabricated using various methods including two-photon photolithography, interference lithography, and molding. Recently, capillary force (i.e., surface tension) has been utilized to fold millimetric elastic membranes into 3D structures (termed as capillary origami). The capillary force appears to be ideal for 3D microfabrication since it becomes dominant at microscale compared with other forces such as gravitational or magnetic force. Making use of capillary origami, we developed a facile strategy to fabricate complex 3D hydrogel structures (3D wrinkled imprinting structures) with programmable shape and size. This method is simple and spontaneous, involving placing a hydrogel droplet on a wrinkled-PDMS sheet prepared by one-push stretching and subsequently crosslinking it at any moment during hydrogel evaporation. Moreover, we succeeded 3D hydrogel structures covered with metallic nanofilm. The developed method of fabricating hydrogel with complex 3D structures is broadly applicable for a wide range of hydrogels, holding great potential for broad applications such as tissue regeneration, drug delivery, and flexible electronics.

This study is related to water injection on a micro gas turbine engine. Water injection tests have been carried out for a CapstoneC30 micro gas turbine. According to experimental results, water injection tends to cause the decrease of combustion efficiency because water is unburnable fluid. The decrease of combustion efficiency leads to the reduction of power output. Therefore, it can be considered that ethanol is valid fluid because of its combustibility. Then, water-ethanol mixture injection tests have been conducted for a CapstoneC30 micro gas turbine. Ethanol content has been varied from 20% to 60%. The results of water-ethanol mixture injection tests have been compared with the results of water injection. A model has been developed to investigate the evaporation behavior of water-ethanol droplets under micro gas turbine environments. The variation of air temperature and droplet diameter along flow path have analyzed for the water-ethanol mixture injection in the Capstone C30 micro gas turbine.
