Authors made an experimental event recorded which can record not only the behavior of a train, but also accurately identify the sites where wheel slides and spins occur. The recorder was installed on a JR Ltd Express EMU operated on conventional lines. They analyzed the date piled up in the recorded, and found several wayside factors which cause the wheel slides. The wheel slide occurrence rate par a 1000 km train running distance was discussed under various weather conditions. Moreover, the results of the investigation were also discussed on the wheel slide occurrence rate in a snow bound area and the relationship between a snow weather condition and wheel slide occurrence rate.

Rail corrugations whose wavelengths are around 1.2m have been formed very heavily on slab track section, particularly in ascending slopes, in Shin-Kanmon channel tunnel of San-yo Shinkansen line. The rail corrugations are giving rise to noise and large interacting forces between wheel and rail which are one of main causes of not only track but also vehicle deteriorations. In this report, considering the findings obtained so far, plastic flow caused by longitudinal creepage on the rail surface was investigated with an optical microscopy and rust covering the rail surface was analyzed and identified with infrared rays absorbing spectra. From the investigated results, the mechanism of rail corrugations was studies focusing on driving forces of wheels to run up the relatively steep ascending slopes of channel tunnel, on wheel load variation excited at rail welds and on the decrease of traction coefficient caused by the rust covered on the running band of rail under the sea.

We measure the wear of contact wire using the electric inspection car, and residual diameters are computed from a width of sliding surface of contact wire. As the principle, only the sliding surface reflect laser beam. Accordingly, we cannot get the actual width when other parts reflect. The reflections show noise data. In our study, we take notice that the side portions of contact wire exist both adjacent sides of sliding surface, never reflect the laser beam and show the shadows. Then, the shadows and the sliding surface point out the horizontal diameter of the contact wire. Therefore, we developed the system to eliminate the noise data owing to neglect the reflections of laser beam outside the contact wire.

Securing of transport reliability is one of the important missions of the railway company. We have enforced a countermeasure from both sides of hardware and software till now. But, we must have to plan for the stability improvement of the transport from the various points of view to get more trust from the customers. So, we developed the system that other devices mutual backup the device which broke down. JR east is developing the Advanced Commuter Train ("AC Train") with the aim of achieving concepts for the commuter and suburban trains of the 21st century. One of development concepts of the AC train is "improvement of transport reliability". It feature mutual backup of control equipment including safety equipment (ATS-P : Automatic Train Stop with pattern), door operating unit and brake demand operating device. It is the device that gives great transportation influence when these devices cause trouble. In addition, it is plural carried devices in a train. Information technology is required, but a recent vehicle is equipped with control information system in order to develop a backup system. JR east develops TIMS (Train Information Management System) as a vehicle information control unit already, and a newer system is equipped AC Train. We call a vehicle information control unit of AC Train AIMS (Advanced train Information Management System), and there is high-speed inside of car LAN (Local Area Network) than TIMS. ATS-P used LAN of AIMS and did it with the system that a device of front and back of a train backed up mutually. A door is equipped with a lot by a train, but AIMS understand it which door device broke down by monitoring information and can send order information to a door device to back up. Brake control unit makes control to be different every device every vehicle in order to be different in load. Because load is different, we establish a control unit every chassis every chassis in AC Train adopting articulated system in particular. In this way, as the system that the device, which was different in movement, backed up mutually, we developed a backup system of brakes demand operating device. In development of this time, the basic function of each backup system by practical use of an information transmission device was able to confirm that we worked by a conventional examination well. We are to do examination about confirmation of the durability by run examinations or miniaturization of a device in future.

The introduction of networked control systems within modern trains, mean that complex information may be passed between different sub-systems in different carriages. The operation of the brake and traction systems may be optimized to substantially improve the performance of the total vehicle system from a operating and a maintenance perspective. The intelligent sub-systems can be used in a coordinated fashion. Multiple unit systems can be more robust to failure (such as the loss of one bogie) and the braking forces can be more efficiently redistributed along the whole train length should such a failure occur. For heavy haul freight significant energy savings and fleet usage improvements can be demonstrated.

In order to enhance the speed of wheel slide protection control for railway vehicles, modeling of adhesion characteristics after saturation of adhesion force, which had hitherto not been performed with trains, was performed via a beam model. The behavior of adhesive force between the wheel and rail in a wet condition was examined with a brake performance test stand for an actual vehicle. Results of comparing the model and test values indicated that the beam model represented test values well.

This paper is the description of the experimental simulation of our newly produced Test Track and Light Rail Vehicles, which are driven by storge energy on boarded. The first vehicle has Electric Double layer Capacitor battery, and the second has a Flywheel battery, as to storage energy. So, these vehicles able to store energy themselves on regenerate braking. Therefore these vehicles consume energy less than traditional vehicles on running.

In the age of traction system made of inverter and ac traction motors, distributed traction system with pure electric brake of regenerative mode has been recognised very advantageous. This paper proposes a new system as the lowest life-cycle cost system for high performance rapid transit, a new architecture and optimum parameters of power feeding system, and a new running method of trains. In Japan, these components of this proposal, i.e. pure electric brake and various countermeasures of reducing loss of regeneration have been already popular but not as yet the new running method for better utilisation of the equipment and for lower life-cycle cost. One example of what are proposed in this paper will be made as Tsukuba Express, which is under construction as the most modern commuter railway in Greater Tokyo area.

In several discussions around EMC problems, international standards on several industry fields are to being decided in the viewpoints of measurement and human effects. In these situations, railway technologies are not excluded but electromagnetic field radiated by railway is widely distributed and changed with complexity. Therefore, it is not easy for railway technologies to adapt EMC standard (IEC 62236) directly. This paper mainly describes the magnetic field radiation status in new transportation systems and related EMC subjects. And at the present stage, we describe how influences are to be taken considerations in these standards.

The feasibility study of a vehicle for a people mover transport system is presented. The vehicle was conceived for obtaining minimum life cycle cost, i.e. minimum operating (maintenance) costs and minimum construction costs. The cab is a two axle vehicle driven by two LIM (Linear Induction Motors). The two linear induction motors are carried respectively by two mini-bogies, positioned under the two main wheelsets. This allows to keep the needed clearance between the motor and the stator without increasing the stiffness of the vertical suspension.

The self-powered active vibration control systems, which produce control force using energy regenerated by dampers are applied to suspensions of rubber-tired vehicles. Such systems do not require external energy to produce control force. To discuss the feasibility, the balance between the regenerated and the consumed energy is examined through numerical simulations. The results indicate that the system can achieve active control that has better isolation performance than a passive and a semi-active control system under the condition only with the regenerated energy.

This paper describes dynamic characteristics of AGT vehicle with single-axle bogie system and steering system under earthquake. By using 13 degree-of-freedom dynamics model (two wheel model) and multibody dynamics models, a computer simulation in case of earthquake is carried out. By the result obtained from computer simulation, action of the AGT vehicle in case of an earthquake was clarified.

For some time now, the synchronous long stator propulsion system of the TRANSRAPID has attained a level of maturity suitable for practical application. The world's first reference line for deployment of this system is located in Shanghai, and if things go according to schedule, will connect Pudong International Airport with Long Yang Road station as of 2004. A new propulsion system structure based on concepts and prototypes of the various propulsion components using progressive technologies has been developed for concrete applications.

To improve the efficiency of the linear induction motors (LIMs) for transportation, the compensation of end effect for LIM with the restriction of length and the long LIM with small end effect essentially are discussed respectively. Based on the proposed concept, the compensation method of the magnet rotator type and AC coil type of compensators are developed respectively. The utility is not yet confirmed. As for the long LIM with length of 10m, the analysis shows that the efficiencies are about 85% at 40km/h and above 90% at 360km/h respectively.

Train headway models are established by analyzing the operation of the Transrapid Super-speed Maglev System (TSMS). The variation in the minimum allowable headway for trains of different consists is studied. A potential Beijing-Shanghai Maglev line is used as an illustration to undertake capacity analyses with the model and methods. The example shows that the headway models for analyzing the carrying capacity of Maglev systems are very useful for the configurational design of this new transport system.

In order to improve the characteristics of guidance for magnetically-levitated surface transport (Maglev) vehicles, an electromagnetic guidance control system is proposed [1], to add a current 90 degrees different in phase to the propulsion system. It enables Maglev vehicles to run with higher stability in guidance. This control system does not need other devices for the substation or ground equipments to generate the guidance force. We calculated the properties of Maglev vehicle dynamics in the levitated and wheel-supported running modes and found some advantages in the new guidance control system.

The purpose of this study is to reduce a mechanical heat load which is generated inside the on-board superconducting coil (SC-coil) for JR MAGLEV. The mechanical heat generation inside the SC-coil-installed inner vessel was investigated with on the assumption that the mechanical heat is generated by the friction caused by the relative microscopic slips between fasteners and the SC-coil. SC-coil vibration tests and FEM analysis were performed to study the correlation between SC-coil vibration and the mechanical loss. A fretting wear test was performed at liquid-helium-cooled boundaries between structural components of the SC-coil at relative slips of less than 30 microns.

In 2003 the Shanghai MAGLEV Transportation System Transrapid starts operation on an elevated single and double-span guideway with speeds over 400km/h. For the investigations the system is approximated by a single mass vehicle and an extended vehicle with different length on an undamped flexible single or double-span beam with rigid piers. The general control and simulation problem of the vehicle/guideway dynamics at high speeds includes two limiting cases. In the first case, the magnet force is constant (only the weight of the vehicle) and in the second case, the magnet gap is constant (the vehicle is following the guideway). The elastic structure of the guideway is approximated by supported homogenous elastic single and double-span beams described by partial BERNOULLI EULER beam equations. The partial differential equation can be transformed into an infinite number of ordinary differential equations by means of a modal transformation. An approximation is achieved by considering only the first modes. Simulation results for the single mass vehicle are given comparing the solutions for maximum dynamic displacements of a single and a double-span guideway, when the moving vehicle is modeled with a constant force or with a constant gap. For the extended vehicle the same results are given, when the moving vehicle is modeled with a constant distributed force.
