A questionnaire survey was conducted involving housing companies in Japan which superintend rental housing and have an obligation to make efforts to admit service dogs (guide, hearing, and mobility service dogs) in their housing. This study clarified the companies' level of familiarity with service dog legislation, the present situation regarding accepting these dogs in their housing, and the problems. The majority of the companies did not know about the law and acceptance of service dog users as the types of resident was limited. The companies which did not accept service dogs pointed out the inadequate facilities in the housing as the most frequent reason. Furthermore, they needed to know how to explain to other residents about service dogs, irrespective of acceptance or refusal. However, it was also revealed that the companies themselves did not have sufficient knowledge regarding service dogs. To promote the acceptance of service dogs in rental housing, it is necessary to offer information to housing companies about the contents of the law, roles of service dogs, how to accept them, how to explain to other residents about service dogs, how to revise management bylaws governing the housing, and consultation bureau for the admittance of service dogs. At the same time, appeals to the administrative authorities which have jurisdiction would be valid.
