In recent years, training paralyzed hands for use in daily life has been emphasized. This study clarified one such strategy. The subjects were eight expert therapists (average clinical years, 10.6±4.0 years) of whom individual interviews were conducted. The data were analyzed using steps for coding and theorization. Bringing the paralyzed hand to life involved the following: 1) adjusting the difficulty level to provide psychological support; 2) using self-help tools; 3) using goal-setting tools and cooperating with the family to introduce the concept; and 4) possibly not setting concrete goals.
This study reports an interesting topic in which deep sensation disturbance in the foot in stroke patients, in addition to age and neuropsychological tests, was found to be associated following the resumption of driving. We believe that further accumulation of data from this study will help occupational therapists in evaluating stroke patients following the resumption of driving. (Keiichiro Aoki, PhD, OTR, Editor)
The transtheoretical model assesses a patient’s readiness to change a health-related behavior and provides strategies to assist the patient with this change. This report describes a case in which an intervention based on the transtheoretical model produced positive results. The content is useful to occupational therapists who aim to promote the health and well-being of their clients. Further case studies are desirable.(Takayuki Watabe,PhD,OTR,Editor)
