Various micro-crystals of colloids and powders have been studied by the electron micro diffraction method with the three stage electron microscope.
The developement of the three stage elctron microscope of both Boersch and Hillier types is reviewed. Boersch type can be used for electron microscope image with low and high magnification, electron diffraction of selected area, and dark field image or Bragg's dark field image and Hillier type as electron diffraction of high resolution or high dispersion, shadow microscope image, micro-image, and Kossel-Möllenstedt image.
Using these methods of electron microdiffraction, the identification of crystal, the determination of crystal habit, crystal axis and interplanar spacing, the calculation of thickness of thin crystal, and the mechanism of crystal growth and crystal transfor-mation have been obtained. Samples were particles of gold sol, thin films of lead iodide, fibrous crystals of vanadium pendoxide sol, lamellar crystals of metal phtha-locyanine, precipitates of barium sulfate, clay minerals from Kurata mine, "Bikini dust" which fell on the No.5 Fukuryu Maru, and fillers in rubber.
