Field survey on overwintering larvae of Parnara guttata (BREMER et GREY) was carried out from Dec. 1990 to March 1991 in rice fields of National Agriculture Research Center, Yawahara Ibaraki Pref. In December several larvae were found in bag-formed leaves of regenerated younger rice plants. One fourth-instar larve was found inside of a dead stock at the same height as the ground. Probably this is the most northest finding of overwintering larva in this species.

Twelve of twenty-six larval populations, which were reared from separate egg-masses collected in Shizuoka Prefecture, showed high resisitance to methomyl. Change of methomyl susceptibility by selfing or mating between field populations and a susceptible strain, was demonstrated. Several pyrethroids were effective against methomyl resistant populations.

Light-colored forms were produced at higher temperatures and dark-colored forms were produced at lower temperatures in a clone of A. gossypii isolated from melon. These color forms in the clone or a population of melon did not have difference of aliesterase activity, associating with organophosphorus resistance.

Larvae of Anomala cuprea were maked at abdominal segments (9, 10th) with a heated wire. Thirty maked larvae were released in the sweet potato field (7.2m×25m). Two of them were recaptured at two sites of 13.9m and 17.1m away from the released point, and nineteen non-maked larvae were collected after 20 days from the date of release. As survival rate of larvae was assumed to be30%-40%, number of larvae in this field was estimated to be 94 to 126.

Sounds produced in soil by larvae of cupreous chafer were recorded on tape with a concrete microphone. The recorded sounds showed that larvae are always active in soil. The sounds did not show any periodicity, but suggested larval movements would alternate with the resting periods.

Calcium cyanamide was applied simultaneously on 3ha of habitat of apple snail, Pomacea canaliculata LAMARCK, in Toyoda-Cyo Shizuoka Pref. for the purpose of eradication of the snails. Mortality of the snails was lower in paddy fields where water depth decreased more than about 3cm in a day, and as a result the snails were not eradicated. To eradicate the snails, the depth of water should be less than 3cm when calcium cyanamide applied.

In field trials, phytotoxicity symptoms on young grape leaves sprayed with Bordeaux mixture were reduced by including the paraffin adhesive, “Kikunou”. The most effective concentration of “Kikunou” which did not decrease control efficacy of downy mildew on grapevine was 0.25%.

The soil residue of PCNB, which is much used in vegetable-growing districts, was measured for six months in the open soils and in the soils covered with black plastic mulch. The rates of disappearance of residues of PCNB were different under these two conditions. In the plastic mulched soil, PCNB remained at high concentration. The residual concentration both of the metabolite and the impurity of PCNB were lower than that of PCNB, and the rate of disappearance of them in the open soil was not so different from that in the plastic mulched one.
