An introduction to the positron science and the Slow Positron Facility in High Energy Accelerator Research Organization (KEK) is given. The Facility provides an intense slow positron beam based on a dedicated linac. The Positron and positronium (a hydrogen-like bound state of a positron and an electron) are unique probes for materials. Various standard techniques of the positron annihilation spectroscopy and those related to slow positron beams are described with some applications. After giving a brief history of the facility, its present status is reported together with some recent results. A future plan (not authorized yet) of the facility expecting 109 e+/s slow positron pulse- DC-beam (s) using a superconducting linac is also described.

The RI Beam Factory (RIBF) of RIKEN Nishina Center for Accelerator-Based Science, which succeeded in extracting first beam on December 28th 2006 as scheduled, is currently conducting nuclear physics experiments. The RIBF has six accelerators, one of which is the world's biggest and most powerful superconducting ring cyclotron (SRC). The accelerators require not only a huge amount of electricity but also a reliable power supply for the He-cryogenic system, vacuum system and superconducting magnet systems. For this purpose, the co-generation system (CGS) was introduced. A gas turbine generates 6.5 MW of power from liquid natural gas (LNG) and supplies it to the systems mentioned above as an uninterruptible power source (UPS). By utilizing gas heat exhaust from the gas turbine, the CGS will also supply cooled water to the cooling system of the RIBF accelerators as well as to the air-conditioning system for the building. The CGS plant was completed on the 1st floor of the RIBF accelerator building and it began operating in April 2003. This paper covers the merits and demerits.

We developed a two-beam type IH-RFQ (Interdigital H type Radio Frequency Quadrupole) linac system to prove the principle of a multi-beam type IH-RFQ linac in Research Laboratory for Nuclear Reactors of Tokyo Institute of Technology. The multi-beam type RFQ linac has several beam channels in a cavity for accelerating high intensity and low energy heavy ion beams. The developed system consists of a two-beam type IH-RFQ cavity as a prototype of the multibeam type cavity, a two-beam type laser ion source with DPIS (Direct Plasma Injection Scheme) and beam analyzers mainly. As a result of the beam acceleration test, the linac system accelerates carbon ions from 5 keV/u to 60 keV/u and generates about 108 mA (2×54 mA/channel) in the total output current. In this paper, we describe the development of the linac system and some results of the beam acceleration test.

Recent advances in transistor technology are making solid-state RF amplifiers an increasingly viable alternative to tube systems in accelerator applications. This paper details the development and performance of a range of new high power amplifiers, based on current MOSFET technology, and designed specifically for this application. A generic modular architecture that can be used to construct high power CW amplifier systems operating from HF up to S-band, is detailed. Key design considerations in terms of modularity, redundancy, reliability and cost are discussed.
