The synthesis of monodisperse iron oxide nanoparticles has long been of scientific and technological interest. Its particle dispersions have been widely used as ferrofluid. The use of coated iron oxide nanoparticles in clinical medicine has also intensified. All these applications require that the nanoparticles are superparamagnetic with sizes smaller than 20 nm and narrow overall particle size distribution so that the particles have uniform physical and chemical properties. Here we report two simple routes to monodisperse iron oxide nanoparticles. One is the high-temperature reaction of iron (III) acetylacetonate in organic solvents, and the other is the bionic synthesis in side the apo-ferritin.

Usually, in the system of AlN with Y
2O
3 additive, first of all, yttrium aluminate is produced as a grain boundary phase. And, by further heat treatment in nitrogen-reducing atmosphere, it is found that yttrium aluminate at grain boundary is transformed into conductive material from the surface. As a result, fortunately, we found AlN containing conductive material as a grain boundary phase showed electrical conductivity. The purpose of this study is to fabricate electrically conductive AlN ceramics with high thermal conductivity, and to control the electrical conductivity by addition of a small amount of CeO
2, which is easily reduced compared with Y
2O
3. In this presentation, we will report the effect of fabrication conditions on properties of electrically conductive AlN ceramics.

For magnetoelectric effect --- induction of magnetization by anelectric field or of polarization by a magnetic field, although it waspredicted thereotically early in the 1894 and demonstrated inexperiments twenty years later, the developments were very much slowowing to very few systems of magneticferroelectrics in nature\cite{fiebig,hill}. In the recent five years, it comesinto a revival accompanying the development of materialsciences. Besides magnetic/ferroelectric composites, manysingle phase materials with linear magnetoelectric effect arefound\cite{fiebig}. In order to obtain excellent high temperaturemagnetoelectric effect, one of strategies is to make use of solid solutionof magnetic and ferroelectric materials. Here, we reported several solid solution systems ofBiFeO$_3$(LaFeO$_3$,LaCrO$_3$)-Bi$_4$Ti$_3$O$_{12}$,Bi$_5$Fe$_2$Ti$_2$O$_{15}$, Bi$_3$FeTiO$_9$, andBi$_2$FeCrO$_6$ prepared with various methods ofconventional solid state reaction, sol-gel, coprecipitation, andhydrothermal. X-ray diffraction and magnetic succeptibilitymeasurements indicated that their homogeneous single phases wereobtained successfully. The magnetic properties were discussed from the viewpoint of superexchangeinteraction. Except the case of Bi$_2$FeCrO$_6$, they are not goodcandidates for magnetoelectric materials as expectedpreviously\cite{singh,james,zhang}. For the case of Bi$_2$FeCrO$_6$,it exhibits one magnetic transition at about 140K, which is alsodifferent from recent thereotical calculations\cite{spaldin:bf,spaldin:bcf}.

Alumina / Ni composites have been rarely fabricated by sintering without processes of hot-press. In the present work, Alumina / Ni composites with high bulk densities more than 96% in relative density were fabricated under pressureless conditions by following simple processes. Anhydrous aluminum sulfates containing Ni
2+ ion up to corresponding composition of NiAl
2O
4 were prepared by a micro-wave drying from aqueous solutions. The Ni-spinel powders were obtained by thermal decomposition of the sulfate. The Ni-spinels were converted to Alumina / Ni composites and sintered by firing in a carbon powder under pressureless conditions.

We newly developed the RS-SiC that had excellent strength property in comparison with conventional RS-SiC. This paper shows the effect of silicon size on three-point bending strength for making clear the strengthening mechanism. As a result, we confirmed that there is a large change in three-point bending strength over the range of residual silicon size examined and the relationship between the three-point bending strength and the residual silicon size corresponds closely. It is supposed that the strength of high-strength reaction-sintered silicon carbide is affected by piling up the dislocation at the interface of crystals.

We newly developed the RS-SiC that had excellent strength property in comparison with conventional RS-SiC. High-strength RS-SiC is one of the most promising candidates for high-temperature structural application, such as heat exchanger and so on, because of fully dense, excellent corrosion resistance and high thermal conductivity. This paper shows the evaluation of high-temperature strength properties of high-strength RS-SiC. Four-point bending strength at high temperature (1473K) was average 939 MPa (m=8.9) and it was higher than commercial sintered SiC strength.

Core-shell particles were obtained via the layer-by-layer assembly of oppositely charged polyelectrolytes on the colloidal templates. Furthermore, hollow capsules can easily be prepared by removal of the core templates. These capsules were expected for the application of delivery vehicles for medical, pharmaceutics, cosmetics, and food industries. The capsules with the external stimuli-responsive function are quite attractive as "Smart materials" for these applications. In this study, UV-responsive organic-inorganic composite capsules were developed on the basis of photocatalytic function of titania. The morphological changes as a function of UV-irradiation time were investigated by electron microscopy and fluorescence microcopy, etc.

We prepared the micro-thermoelectric hydrogen sensor with the combination of the thermoelectric effect of SiGe thin film and the Pt-catalyzed exothermic reaction of hydrogen oxidation. Sensitivity The thermoelectric properties of the SiGe thin film could be improved by optimizing carrier concentration using RF-sputtering method with induction coil as advantage of easily controllability of high doping, and sensitivity of the device in this work was larger than that of the device with SiGe thermoelectric thin film using conventional RF-sputtering method.
