Ultrahigh porous cordierite with oriented micrometer-sized cells was prepared by novel gelcasting method. Gelation agent, water for pore former and ceramic powder were mixed and gelled. The resultant gel obtained was frozen, dried, degreased at 600C and sintered. The porous ceramic showed ultra highly porosity around 87-93%. SEM observations of porous cordierite showed the microstructure of orderly uni-directionally oriented micrometer-sized cell. The cell size, wall thickness of cell and number of cell were characterized by image analysis. The pore size distribution by Hg porosimetry showed a bimodal distribution.

We have recently developed a novel nanocomposite for a soft-tissue-compatible material: the functional polymer substrate, whose surface was modified with nano-sized and calcined hydroxyapatite (HAp) crystals through covalent linkage. In this presentation, we will report on the fabrication of nanosized hydroxyapatite-coated microsphere and its application to cell scaffolds.

2 coating on polymer substrate through covalent bonding. The composite TiO
2-coated substrate photo-reactivity and anti-infective effect by UV irradiation. In this report, the effect of ultrasonic reactivity of the TiO
2-coated substrate will be presented. The development of a percutaneous device made of the TiO
2-coated fibers by flocking process will be also presented.

Fluorescence bioimaging is one of the most important technologies for biomedical applications. The most serious problem for the imaging is color fading, phototoxicity, autofluorescence and strong scattering due to the use of short-wavelength excitation light. For solving all of these problems, we propose to use fluorescence under near infrared excitation by using rare-earth doped ceramic nanophoshpors. Surface modification of the particles with biofunctional polymer was applied for dispersion stability, specific interaction with the substances in biosystem and chemical durability. Some demonstrative works of the bioimaging will be also presented.

Alumina-magnesia castable is mainly applied to steel ladles. This material generally consists of alumina, magnesia, silica and alumina cement, and generates spinel and CA6 when it is heated up. The said spinel makes solid solution with alumina, and generates lattice defect spinel involving cation defect. In such vacancy, FeO in slag can be trapped. Moreover, alumina in the castable material reacts with CaO in slag and generates CA6. Resulting from these reactions, slag viscosity increases which leads to restraint of slag penetration into the castable material.
Thus, in this study, the additive amount of each raw material was changed, and its influence on product distribution, alteration of microstructure and slag penetration features were investigated.

With the continuous development of China's economy in the past years, the basic industries such as metallurgy and cement have been developed, which have promoted the research and development of refractories to make a remarkably progress in the past years. This paper has been reviewed the development of the refractories in China on the aspects of CaO containing refractories, refractory oxide-nonoxide composites, nano-technology, circumstance friendship refractories as well as recycle and utilization of the used refractories. Though there are still a lot of questions needed to investigate, the technologies have been remarkably progressed in the passed years, and it is considered that the research achievement and technologies can be realized in the following years.

We prepared two new water-soluble titanium complexes with L-serine and L(-)-threonine amino acids. The TiO
2 powders obtained by hydrothermal treatment of these titanium complexes with amino acids were composed of nanosized anatase or anatase and brookite phases. Photocatalytic properties of the prepared materials were characterized in terms of oxalic acid decomposition in aqueous solution under ultraviolet irradiation. In this photocatalytic reaction the samples synthesized by hydrothermal treatment of the titanium-threonine complex at 200 ºC for 24 h exhibited higher photocatalytic activity than the commercial anatase-type TiO2 photocatalyst (ST-01, Ishihara Sangyo Kaisya Ltd.).

TiO2(B) was obtained from glycolato titanium complex by hydrothermal synthesis. The particles had rod-like morphology, indicating anisotropic crystal growth by adsorption of glycolic acid as complexant agent. No crystal growth TiO2(B) particles were separated from the solution treated in several conditions solution. The particles size and morphology were controlled by hydrothermal crystal growth.
