The purpose of this trial is to make clear the possibility of using Hemp drill as a forage seeder in comparison with hand sowing. 1. As a result of this test this instrument may be useful for orchard-grass alone or orchardgrass mixed with clover, because the amount of seeds sown can be adjusted in the range of 1330-2270gr per 10 a in the former case or 1690-3030 gr per 10a in the latter. 2. It takes about 60 minutes to sow 10a by this seeder with a 4 furrow opener (furrow width 21. 5cm). The efficiency is five times as high as in case of hand sowing. 3. The seed distribution is more homogeneous by this drill than by hand sowing.

1) In order to know the relation between rice plant and forage crops in the paddy fields, we have studied the suitability of cropping systems by planting several forage crops before and after the rice plants with some shifting in planting. 2) We have made four classifications on rice planting; such as very early, early, usual and late. 3) Barnyard grass, sudan grass, corn, cow pea, sunflower and sweet potato were suitable as the first crops to be planted after harvesting of the very early rice planting. Chinese milk-vetch and transplanted or direct sown rape were suitable as the second crops. 4) Rape, oat, turnip and radish were suitble as the first crops after harvesting of early rice planting. As for the second crops, wheat, rye, oat and leguminous crops such as Chinese milk-vetch and vetch over the winter were suitable. 5) Chinese milk-vetch, common vetch and hairy vetch sown among standing rice plants were suitable for usual rice planting. Growth of oat sown after plowing on the paddy field was especially good. 6) Oat and transplanted rape were suitable after harvesting the late rice planting. Harvest was greater when soybean and corn were sown mixed in April. 7) "Late rice planting+forage crops" was the best cropping system with the view of Total Digestive Nutrient. "Early rice planting+forage crops" and "very early rice planting+forage crops" were better than "usual rice planting+forage crops".

The studies were made on the relationship between the viable seeds present in the surface soil and the dung-pads and secondary succession of plant communities on "Umatateba" (viz. resting place in the rangeland). The total number of seeds recognized in the surface soils and the dung-pads on "Umatateba" were 1867 including 13 species, among which Hydrocotyle ramiflora, Zoisia japonica, Haloragis micrantha, Agrostis clavata, Carex nervata, Eriochloa villosa, Potentilla Freyniana, Carex albata, were generally shown. The plants of the numerous amount among the gatherd seeds were Hydrocotyle ramiflora and Zoisia japonica, being over about 50% together with their species throughout the investigation period. In paticular, the seeds of Zoisia japonica showed more than 33% of the total number in the dung-pads. From this result, the seed-populations in the surface soil and the dung-pads have been shown to parallel the expected opportunities for the vegetational changes on "Umatateba".
