In the context of an intense production of knowledge and development of new technologies, the main challenge for risk researchers is the timely and efficient use of their research results to support risk-based decision making. This paper discusses the role of scientific experts as support to authorities and industry and describes several initiatives contributing to bring together the stakeholders involved in risk management.

This paper will make an overview on current radiation risk assessment and management, and also discuss current issues after reflection of the accident at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power station in 2011. Historically, the risk-based approach was introduced based on the assumption that radiation risk follows a linear-non-threshold model for cancer and hereditary effects. Since then, radiological protection has developed the principles and the fundamental framework for the risk management. Currently, radiological protection has evolved from a “classical” top-down approach. The talk and collaboration between radiological protection community and risk analysis community like SRA will be needed to build more acceptable and feasible management and regulation for radiation and chemicals.

Society for Risk Analysis, Japan (SRA-Japan) was founded in 1988, as a section of SRA. Currently the structure of SRA and its regional organizations like SRA-Japan is being discussed. This paper summarizes the establishment of SRA-Japan and its subsequent history on the point of view of the relationship with SRA.

Even if it is no exaggeration to say “It is the times of chemical substances.” In the reason, the benefit (our life does not make ends meet without the chemical substance) and the risk (chemical pollution threatens our life) are raised simultaneously as seen in agricultural chemicals. At first, I considered the risk in the compound pollution (pollution to compound of chemical substances) through R. Carson's Silent Spring mainly in this paper. Then I discussed about the risk of genetic engineering for food production in the point of ‘externalities.' For ‘The Other Road (our only chance to reach a destination that assures the preservation of our earth)' in Silent Spring, I examined from the idea of mitigation and resilience in the ‘multi-risk era,' at the end.
