I began studying the taxonomy of Japanese polychaetes in 1957, and have continued this study after retiring from the National Science Museum, Tokyo in 1994. In 1962, I studied the Japanese polychaetes with Dr. Olga Hartman at the University of Southern California and we were published in "The polychaetous annelids of Japan, Part I, II" (1964) by the University of Southern California. This publication includes 50 families, 227 genera and 467 species of the Polychaeta. Afterwards I described polychaetes collected from many localities around Japan, and at present there are some 930 species, including 233 holotypes I designated, from Japanese waters. The total number of figures written about those specimens amounts to 9200. I am proceeding with the work of entering various information about 550 polychaete species into a personal computer database.

Current status of the taxonomy of the caridean shrimp family Glyphocrangonidae (Crustacea: Decapoda) is reviewed. At present 77 named species are known world wide, all of which inhabit deep-water greater than 200m. In spite of the recent taxonomic studies, there are still many taxonomic problems to be clarified, some of which are presented here. Geographical distribution of species of the family is briefly discussed.

The family Reduviidae, or assassin bugs, is highly diverse in its number of taxa, morphology, habitat, and feeding behavior. It is the second largest family in terms of the number of species, in the suborder Heteroptera, or true bugs, with about 6,800 species classified into at least 23 subfamilies. The diversity in morphology is explained here using examples of four subfamilies, viz., the Harpactorinae having a general form, the Emesinae characterized by a strikingly slender body and appendages, the Holoptilinae with the body and appendages densely covered with very long setae, and the Phymatinae having forelegs strongly specialized for capturing prey. Reduviids are found on the living leaves of trees, on tree trunks, under the bark of rotten trees, on dead branches with leaves, in grasslands, including marshes, among leaf-litter of forest floors, and so on. Among the subfamilies in the Reduviidae, the Centrocnemidinae exclusively live on the tree trunks and their body surface strongly resembles a trunk in color and structure; the Emesinae contains unique inhabitants of lava tubes and spider webs. All reduviids are predatory and food items range from small arthropods, such as insects, to mammal blood, including that of humans. Different subfamilies or tribes have developed distinctive feeding methods and behavior. For example, the Harpactorinae pin their prey using the anteriorly extended rostrum, and the Emesinae catch their prey by the quick movement of their raptorial forelegs. The history of taxonomic and faunal studies on the Japanese Reduviidae is briefly documented. Eighty-two species in 45 genera (nine subfamilies) are currently recognized in Japan. Finally, approximately 120 species are estimated to occur in the country.

Kinorhyncha is one of the meiobenthic invertebrate phyla, with species generally less than 1mm in body length. This paper provides a brief review of the morphology, habitats, distribution, systematics, reproduction and development, plus current and past studies of this phylum. About 150 valid species are known world-wide, all of which are free-living and inhabit marine or estuarine environments. Phylogenetically, they are closely related to the Loricifera and Priapulida. Their bodies are bilaterally symmetrical and consist of 13 segments armed with spines. The first segment is a spherical head, the second segment is a neck, and the next series of 11 segments form a trunk. By everting and withdrawing the head, the animals move through the sediment and feed. Kinorhyncha are a food source for shrimp and other macrobenthos. Taxonomy of the Kinorhyncha still requires considerable work, with undescribed species being discovered from the oceans world-wide. Along Japanese coasts, seven species belonging to five genera have been reported. New standard Japanese names are proposed for the seven species of marine Kinorhyncha found in Japanese waters.

This paper briefly reviews recent studies of the phylum Ctenophora with emphasis on the body plan and the gastrovascular canal system. Ctenophores are still very poorly known taxa because of the difficulty in preserving entire and intact specimens of such fragile bodied animals. Although 100-150 species have been described (Mills, 2005), this number is most probably an overestimation; there are a considerable number of species with questionable species-status. Recent studies of deep sea fauna using submersibles have revealed several new species (e.g., Thalassocalyce inconstans Madin and Harbison, 1978; Bathocyroe forsteri Madin and Harbison, 1978; Lampocteis cruentiventer Harbison, Matsumoto and Robison, 2001). The Japanese coastal species, Lobatolampea tetragona Horita, 2000, was described as a new genus and species, and a new family was established for it. These new forms possess a peculiar gastrovascular canal system respectively, a character that may contribute significantly to a future revision of the systematics of the Ctenophora.

The systematics community has long recognized that specimen loans are one of the most effective means of making natural history collections in museums accessible to researchers in other institutions. This paper provides an overview of the loan activity involving the zoological collections at the Museum of Texas Tech University in Lubbock, Texas, where the author was employed between 2001-2003. The discussion also addresses the concept of a loan and related subjects such as staff responsibilities, professional standards, policies and procedures, funding, and legal requirements. These issues are currently shared to a large extent among natural history institutions in the United States and other geographic regions. It is concluded that museum collection management, including loan programs, should be a focus for future investment and collaboration. Collection managers and researchers worldwide, need to continue their efforts towards augmenting existing biodiversity research infrastructure and facilitating positive interactions between collection resource providers and collection users.

A recent controversy concerning legitimate scientific names for the subfamilies 'Aulacoscelinae' and 'Megascelinae' (Insecta, Coleoptera, Chrysomelidae), which was caused by the interpretation of Article 29 in the 4th edition of the International Code of Zoological Nomenclature (ICZN), was introduced with the author's comments. Dr.C.A.M. Reid asserted that the spellings of above two subfamilies are wrong grammatically and that accordingly they should be written as 'Aulacoscelidinae' and 'Megascelidinae', respectively. Dr.P.H.A. Jolivet, Dr.M. Schmitt and some of their supporters, opposed Dr.Reid's proposal based on a different interpretation of Article 29.3.1.1 that was newly added to the ICZN 4th ed. This may be considered a rather simple problem resulting from the differences in interpreting the vague words "prevailing usage" in Article 29.3.1.1. A general consideration of the problem leads the present author to support the assertion presented by Dr. Reid that the above two subfamilies should be hereafter written as 'Aulacoscelidinae' and 'Megascelidinae', respectively.
