The seismic performance of traditional wooden buildings was surveyed quantitatively. A case study was made on the damage in KAMAKURA by 1923 Kanto Earthquake. Through the survey the following conclusions on the types of buildings, which were damaged were determined ; -1) roof materials, the heavier materials such as thatched roof or tiled roof caused heavy damage, 2) buildings with higher wall ratio suffered lesser damage 3) no evident tendency was found, concerning the age of the building, 4) a correlation between the damage ratio of wooden houses and the damage ratio of shrines and temples was found, 5) heavier damage of wooden buildings situated on thicker the alluviual soil was observed.
