Some uncertainties still exist concerning the cultural history of Indonesia in the period between the 7th and 10th Centuries, which is the so called Central Javanese Period, and various theories have been expressed. As a matter of fact, a history which for the greater part is hypothetical cannot possibly serve as a firm basis for setting up a chronological order of the historical monuments, which are popularly called "Candi", and are spread over a limited area of Central Java. In this respect, a comparative study of the architectural styles might well represent the proper approach. In this paper, such a study is undertaken by means of analysing the profile of the foot and body of the Candies considering their origins in Indian architectural history. The paper aims finally at suggesting a new hypothesis on the chronological order of the Candies in the Central Javanese Period : 1. ±680 AD-±730 AD Early Dieng Period 2. ±730 AD-±780 AD Later Dieng Period=Early Cailendra Period 3. ±780 AD-±850 AD Borobudur Period 4. ±850 AD-±920 AD The close of the Central Javanese Period
